Schwartz Rounds is Feb. 25

Help: The System is on Overload will be held today, Feb. 25 at noon in 8405 A/B Upstate University Hospital. Schwartz Rounds panelists will discuss demand for medical services exceeding the system's capacity to effectively respond. The discussion may include issues of crowded emergency departments, staff burnout, staff shortages, resource strains, administrative bottlenecks, and delayed or compromised care. Schwartz Rounds is open to staff of all departments and is intended to offer compassionate listening environment. 1 continuing education hour will be provided for participants. Apparel sales are Feb. 25, 26, 27 and online

  • Joey’s Wish will sell shirts today, Feb. 25 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out. Shirts are $20 for short-sleeved and $25 for long-sleeved. To pre-order, email Antoinette Morrell at [email protected]. Proceeds from the sale benefit Joey’s Wish to help aid in ending the addiction crisis. The fund is held at the Upstate Foundation.
  • Upstate’s Nursing Excellence Council will sell crewneck sweatshirts Feb. 26 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital and Feb. 27 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the staff entrance lobby at Community. Sweatshirts are $30 each and available in small to 4XL. Pre-orders for this sale have closed. No special accommodations will be made. Proceeds support the Nursing Recognition Fund. Questions? Rare disease lunch and learn panel is Feb. 28

A lunch and learn panel on Rare Disease Day will be held Feb. 28 at noon in 9295 Weiskotten Hall. Rare Disease Day is a globally coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. The event will feature a diverse panel of speakers, including physicians, researchers, patients, and caregivers. The event is hosted by Upstate Student Government and the GENEius Club. Advocates seek applications for grant awards by Feb. 28

Applications for the Advocates for Upstate’s Grant Funding Program are due Feb. 28 at noon. Awards will be announced in May and funds disbursed between June 1, 2025 and May 31, 2026. Applications for grants are accepted from departments across Upstate Medical University and must be used for items and/or services not funded through department budgets. Spiritual Care offers Ash Wednesday events March 5

Spiritual care chaplains will offer ashes March 5. The schedule is as follows:

  • 7:45 a.m. in room E5402 Upstate University Hospital
  • 8:45 a.m. in fifth floor conference room at UHCC
  • 10 a.m. in Suite D conference room at 550 Harrison
  • 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the pediatric chapel on the 12th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital
  • 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the meditation room on the first floor of Upstate Cancer Center
  • Noon to 1 p.m. and 7:15 to 8 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel on the first floor of Upstate University Hospital

A roman catholic mass including ashes will be held at 4 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel on the first floor of Upstate University Hospital.

Active Shooter Training sessions with UPD are March 5 and 19

University Police will host Active Shooter Training sessions March 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 5143 Nappi Wellness Institute and March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 5002 Nappi Wellness Institute, with a remote option. Pet a Pooch staff wellness event is March 6 

The Pet a Pooch staff wellness event will be held Thursday, March 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 2151 Nappi Wellness Institute. Walk with a Doc is March 8

Tim Creamer, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m. on the upstairs indoor track at the Baldwinsville YMCA, 8040 River Rd., Baldwinsville. Dr. Creamer will present What to Do in an Emergency and then lead participants on a walk. Participants can walk at their own pace and distance. The event is free and open to the public. ProCure launches March 10

ProCure is a new website bringing together expertise from Upstate’s Accounts Payable, Contracts and Campus Purchasing, Hospital Purchasing, Supply Chain Analytics and Systems, and Travel. The integrated platform will launch March 10 and will function similar to the IMT Help Desk and AskHR ticketing sites by providing a centralized resource for procurement-related information and support. End users should continue to use Online Purchase Requisition and Lawson Web Requisition to place their orders, C-Tracks for multi-year agreements, and the [email protected] email for invoice submission and payment inquires. ProCure will be accessible via the Upstate iPage and solutions.upstate.edu. Teaching Kitchen event is March 11

 

Upstate’s Teaching Kitchen event on how to eat for colon health will be held Tuesday, March 11 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in room 2151/2153 Nappi Wellness Institute. The chef will discuss ingredients and cooking techniques for a plant-based recipe while the registered dietician discusses the nutritional benefits of the recipe ingredients. Each presenter will answer questions related to the recipe or any other food and nutrition queries. Student Research Day is March 12

Student Research Day will be held March 12 and will spotlight student researchers in Upstate’s Colleges of Graduate Studies, Medicine, Health Professions, and Nursing. Dearing Writing Award submissions due March 17

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities annual writing award competition seeks submissions by Monday, March 17. The contest is open to all matriculated students, residents, employees, and faculty at Upstate. Works of fiction, poetry, and memoir are accepted on any subject matter. Submit two copies, one including: writer’s name, home address, email address, telephone number, and category. Students should indicate their college and class year. The second copy should include only the title and category with the work. One entry per writer is permitted, a maximum of 2,500 words double-spaced for essays and fiction, and no more than 5 poems. March is National Social Work Month

The Social Work profession is an essential piece of the Upstate community that supports the diverse psychosocial needs of patients across the healthcare continuum and is one of the fastest growing professions in the country. Upstate employs over 80 licensed mastered social workers throughout its hospitals and clinics. This year’s National Social Work Month theme is Compassion + Action. Social workers are uniquely qualified and enter the profession because they truly want to help others, care about people and are often called on to turn their compassion into action to address the variety of barriers and challenges that are faced by people in our community. Celebrate the profession of social work by thanking an Upstate Social Worker in March.

Registration open for Upstate Cancer Research Week

Registration is open and abstracts welcome for Upstate Cancer Research Week. The annual Upstate Cancer Center retreat will be held May 16 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at CNY Biotech Accelerator. A trainee symposium will be held May 15 from 2 to 6 p.m. in 4414 B/C Academic Building. The events will bring together basic scientists, physician scientists, clinicians, and trainees to share the latest in cancer research advancements at Upstate.
