The Informed Patient
The Informed Patient podcast recently featured an interview with Upstate experts about bird flu, a proposed weight-loss drug and Covid’s effect on mental health.
- Avian influenza, or bird flu, has infected chickens -- raising the cost of eggs -- and affected cattle, cats and some humans. Health experts are watching to see whether it become transmissible from human to human, says Elizabeth Asiago-Reddy, MD, in her overview of the disease. She is the chief of infectious diseases at Upstate.
- Ozempic and Wegovy are hugely popular as weight-loss drugs, and a medicinal chemist at Syracuse University is part of a group seeking to create similar drugs without the side effects of the current medications. Robert Doyle, PhD, describes his team’s efforts, which could result in new drugs on the market in the next few years.
- A study of young people who had been infected with COVID-19 found a correlation with mental health problems. Researcher Yanli Zhang-James, MD, PhD, interprets the report’s various findings. She is an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.
