Getting the most out of medical appointments is Feb. 13

A HealthLink seminar focused on how to get the most out of medical appointments will be held Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Survivorship navigator Susan Tiffany, BSN, RN, OCN, and patient navigator Maureen Garvey, BSN, RNC, will share strategies for receiving the best care, collaborating effectively with the healthcare team, seeking second opinions, and using Open Notes to enhance communication and care. Self-Care Extravaganza is Feb. 14

Be Your Own Valentine: Self-Care Extravaganza will be held Friday, Feb. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in rooms 5001/5007 at Nappi Wellness Institute. Staff will have a chance to explore wellness tools, relax with a chair massage, write a love letter to themselves, experience reiki, and savor chocolate meditation. Lauren Angelone, staff wellness support social worker, will also share information about the importance of self-care. Callistus Ditah, MD, will present All About the Heart and Heart Surgery: From CABG to Valve Repair Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. Black History Month Gala is Feb. 22

Upstate’s Black History Month Gala will be held Feb. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sky Armory, downtown Syracuse. Black Hollywood Glam: Lights, Camera, Revolution will feature Samantha Williams, MD, an Upstate graduate, as keynote speaker. Tickets are $75 general admission, $50 for students and trainees, and $40 for members of Upstate’s Student National Medical Association. Tickets include cocktail hour, dinner, awards, entertainment. Proceeds from ticket sales will fund student scholarships. Tickets will be sold Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Academic Building. Advocates seek applications for grant awards by Feb. 28

Applications for the Advocates for Upstate’s Grant Funding Program are due Feb. 28 at noon. Awards will be announced in May and funds disbursed between June 1, 2025 and May 31, 2026. Applications for grants are accepted from departments across Upstate Medical University and must be used for items and/or services not funded through department budgets. Walk with a Doc is March 8

Tim Creamer, MD, clinical assistant professor of medicine, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m. on the upstairs indoor track at the Baldwinsville YMCA, 8040 River Rd., Baldwinsville. Dr. Creamer will present What to Do in an Emergency and then lead participants on a walk. Participants can walk at their own pace and distance. The event is free and open to the public. Student Research Day is March 12

Student Research Day will be held March 12 and will spotlight student researchers in Upstate’s Colleges of Graduate Studies, Medicine, Health Professions, and Nursing. Upstate’s physician assistant program night at the Syracuse Crunch game will be held April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Upstate Medical University Arena. Upstate’s physician assistant class of 2026 will share information on the program and sell pucks for the Chuck-a-Puck prior to the third period. Funds raised support the class. Save the date for yoga for healthcare staff wellbeing, a two-day experiential workshop, to be held May 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The workshop is free. A donation to the Upstate Well fund is welcome. Rebecca Alexander Carey, PT, DPT, and Nayla Khoury, MD, will offer wellness strategies to healthcare staff for personal self-care and to foster healthy interactions with patients and colleagues for improved wellbeing. Global Health seeks volunteers for RSV study

Global Health seeks volunteers 18 years of age and older who are currently experiencing cold symptoms—cough, wheezing, shortness of breath—for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) study. Participants will be monitored for about one month and could be reimbursed for time and travel. Team Upstate seeks St. Baldrick's Day participants

Team Upstate seeks participants willing to shave their heads to help raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation to fund pediatric oncology research.
