Popcorn and snacks for all staff

Pop into the New Year with popcorn and snacks for all Upstate staff Jan. 15 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital and Jan. 17 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community. Off-campus locations will receive snack boxes Jan. 13. Hospital leadership would like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment to excellence in 2024 and in this New Year.

2W lab draw station closing permanently

The laboratory draw station on 2 West at Upstate University Hospital will permanently close Friday, Jan. 31. Staff and patients should use the laboratory draw station on the second floor of Nappi Wellness Institute, Suite 2A. Questions? Email Stacey Keefe at [email protected].

HealthLink on prostate cancer treatment decisions is Jan. 8

Gustavo de la Roza, MD, vice-chair of Pathology and director of Anatomic Pathology, will present Ask Your Pathologist: Treatment Decisions in Prostate Cancer Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 5 p.m. at HealthLink (6333 NY-298, E. Walk with a Doc is Jan. 11

Walk with a Doc will be held Saturday, Jan. 11 at 9 a.m. on the indoor track at the Baldwinsville YMCA (8040 River Rd.). Gregory Conners, MD, MPH, MBA, professor and chair of Pediatrics and executive director of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, will lead the walk after a brief update on the children’s hospital. REDCap training is Jan. 14

Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a secure, multi-purpose, web-based platform that supports data collection for a variety of needs. Health Justice Conference is Jan. 20

Registration is now open for the Health Justice Conference, to be held Monday, Jan. 20 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 4414 B/C Academic Building. The event is free and open to the public. Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity will feature talks and workshops exploring critical health equity topics, including: disability rights, reproductive health, the opioid epidemic, environmental health, structural violence, intergenerational trauma, global health, physician and social responsibility, health care for human trafficking survivors, and financial barriers to health care.

Friend in Deed funding applications due Feb. 7

Applications for the Upstate Foundation’s Friend in Deed funding are due Friday, Feb. 7 by noon. Friend in Deed funding is for projects that enhance the patient experience at Upstate hospitals and clinics. Guidelines and applications are available here: https://forms.office.com/r/x9UJeQCS74. All details can be entered in electronic format. Friend in Deed is the annual fund for the hospitals and is largely supported through donations from grateful patients and their families, as well as members of the Upstate family and the community.

Joey’s Wish third annual bowl-a-thon is Feb. 15

Joey’s Wish Inc. will host its third annual bowl-a-thon Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Flamingo Bowl (7239 CR-57, Liverpool). Tickets are $20 and include two hours of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, soda. A portion of proceeds benefits Joey’s Wish, held at the Upstate Foundation, and 100 percent of money raised will be used to support research to aid in the fight against the addiction crisis. Black History Month Gala is Feb. 22

Upstate’s Black History Month Gala will be held Feb. 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sky Armory, downtown Syracuse. Black Hollywood Glam: Lights, Camera, Revolution will feature Samantha Williams, MD, an Upstate graduate, as keynote speaker. Tickets are $75 general admission, $50 for students and trainees, and $40 for members of Upstate’s Student National Medical Association. Tickets include cocktail hour, dinner, awards, entertainment. Proceeds from ticket sales will fund student scholarships. Tickets will be sold Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Academic Building. Student Research Day is March 12

Student Research Day will be held March 12 and will spotlight student researchers in Upstate’s Colleges of Graduate Studies, Medicine, Health Professions, and Nursing. The event includes oral presentations, a keynote address, and a poster session.

Team Upstate seeks St. Baldrick's Day participants for event March 23

Team Upstate seeks participants willing to shave their heads to help raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation to fund pediatric oncology research. The event will be held March 23 at the Spinning Wheel (7384 Thompson Rd, North Syracuse). This is a family event and all are welcome, including: Upstate staff, students, children, spouses, friends, and family members.   • Wellness Speaks is Jan. 9: Holly Vanderhoff, PhD, associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will discuss toxic positivity Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. via WebEx. Vanderhoff will offer expertise on recognizing thought patters that are unhealthy and strategies for positive thinking that don’t reject difficult emotions. Global Health seeks participants for two studies

  • RSV: Global Health seeks volunteers 18 and older who are currently experiencing cold symptoms—cough, wheezing, shortness of breath— for a Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) study. Participants will be monitored for about one month and could be reimbursed for time and travel.
  • Dengue Fever: Global Health seeks healthy participants ages 18 to 55 to join a dengue research study focusing on prevention and treatment.

Annual health assessments available online for Employee/Student Health compliance

Staff and students can check to ensure their annual health assessment status is current by logging on to the Employee/Student Health portal, here: https://eshportal.upstate.edu/. Select ‘Medical Clearances’ to view status. All Upstate staff, students, volunteers, and contract employees are required to complete an annual health assessment for Employee/Student Health to comply with New York State health code 405.3 and Upstate Policy A-20.
