Upstate celebrates Spiritual Care Week
The following events will be held in celebration of Spiritual Care Week, recognized Oct. 20 to 26:
- Today, Oct. 23 until 2 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital: Stop by to receive an inspirational stone, have your hands blessed, chat with a chaplain, or try Reiki at ‘The Chaplain Is In’ booth.
- Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participate in the annual Interfaith Works of CNY Spiritual Care Day training on addictions, held at May Memorial UU Fellowship. More information can be found at www.interfaithworkscny.org.
Upstate Spiritual Care is a 24/7 service, provided by board certified chaplains, chaplain interns, spiritual care volunteers, and coordinators of specialty services such as Reiki, the hospital choir, on-call clergy and Schwartz Center Compassionate Rounds. This year's theme is 'Chaplains Beyond Religious Roles,’ recognizing our collaboration with a variety of different professionals to provide holistic interdisciplinary care.

HealthLink on supporting someone with cancer is Oct. 23
Supporting a Person Who Has Cancer will be held today, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom and in person at HealthLink/Oasis, 6333 State Route 298, E. Syracuse. Specialists from Upstate Cancer Center will discuss how to offer practical, emotional or spiritual support to someone with cancer, from the patient perspective. They also will address tips for creating a care plan to help the patient manage their home, medical and self-care needs. The HealthLink seminar is open to patients, family, friends, caregivers. Domestic Violence Awareness events are Oct. 23 and 24
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Upstate will host Keep Growing events today, Oct. 23 until 1:30 p.m. in 2149 Nappi Wellness Institute and Oct. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community. Pink in the Rink hockey game is Oct. 25
The Syracuse Crunch will host the annual Pink in the Rink hockey game Friday, Oct 25. Pink in the Rink will feature an Upstate Cancer Center information table in the concourse, in-game announcements, and a mystery puck fundraiser for She Matters. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to the game. The Upstate Mammovan will be parked outside the War Memorial on Oct 25 from noon to 5 p.m. offering breast cancer screenings. Questions? Schwartz Rounds is Oct. 29
Hidden Realities: Complexities and Challenges of Caring for Undocumented Patients will be held Oct. 29 at noon in 1076 A/B/C Upstate Cancer Center. Panelists will share personal experiences on the unique complexities and challenges of caring for undocumented patients, including legal, social, and economic barriers. They will also discuss their ways of providing compassionate, culturally competent care while navigating issues such as fear of deportation and limited access to healthcare resources. Personal stories will highlight the impact of these challenges on both patients and healthcare providers. Schwartz Rounds is open to staff of all departments and is intended to support the work we do by offering a compassionate listening environment. 1 CE hour for participants. Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital pumpkin contest voting is Oct. 30 and 31
Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital will host its annual pumpkin decorating contest complete with prizes and bragging rights. Pumpkins must be real and only uncarved pumpkins will be accepted. Upstate Gala is Nov. 22
The Upstate Foundation Gala will be held Friday, Nov. 22 at the Oncenter. Festivities begin at 8 p.m., with a patron party for sponsors beginning at 7 p.m. The event is casual attire featuring the colors of Upstate, including: navy, sky blue, teal, lime green, or purple. The event will include small-plate dining stations, a live band, a short presentation, socializing, dancing, and a new photo/video area with a 180-degree camera. Proceeds will benefit Upstate’s Department of Emergency Medicine, which provides expert emergency care for more than 130,000 adult and pediatric patients annually across four emergency departments and one pediatric urgent care setting. Advocates seek support for robotic pet therapy program
Since 2019 the Robotic Pet Therapy Program has offered comfort and companionship to Upstate patients, especially elderly patients with dementia and those with developmental disabilities. The dogs or cats go home with the patients and a continuous supply is needed to sustain the program. Advocates for Upstate, in support of Upstate Nursing, seeks pet sponsors. A pet can be sponsored for $100. Sponsors are entitled to recognition by the recipient and their family, and on the Advocates website and social media. Upstate’s endocrine research team seeks healthy participants ages 45 to 65 with a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m2 for a one-time blood draw. To be eligible, participants cannot have diabetes or sleep apnea, cannot be on any diabetes or weight loss medications (such as Ozempic/Wegovy). Lyme diagnostic study seeks participants
Upstate’s Global Health Institute seeks participants aged 7 and up who have been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and developed a rash or those who are suspected by a practitioner to have Lyme disease and have a rash. The research study is looking at an investigational blood test, Liaison LymeDetect. The study seeks to determine if Liaison can detect Lyme disease earlier than conventional diagnostic tests. Health Justice Conference call for proposals and poster presentations
Deadlines have been extended for the Health Justice Conference call for proposals and poster presentations. The call for proposals deadline is now Oct. 27. The deadline for poster presentations is Dec. 1. The Health Justice Conference is an annual student run conference that seeks to promote advocacy. This year's theme for is Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity. We invite proposals for presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions that delve into innovative strategies, research findings, and policy recommendations that promote health equity across various dimensions of identity and experience. Posters describing community projects related to health justice, literature reviews, research on health justice-related topics, or educational/clinical initiatives to promote health equity are encouraged. OMH offers wellness groups
The New York State Office of Mental Health offers all employees an opportunity to practice various coping skills and strengthen their resilience through wellness groups. The groups include deep breathing and simulation exercises. Group sessions offer a warm, inviting space that fosters relaxation virtually and provides examples of calming techniques and basic coping skills. The group sessions are free, confidential, anonymous, and virtual employees can call in from any phone.
