Upstate holds open house for employees to tour new mental health site for kids this Friday
Upstate employees are invited to attend an open house Friday, Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m., for the new Upstate Children’s Pavilion, 655 Madison St. The building, formerly part of Hutchings Psychiatric Center, expands Upstate’s mental health services for children, with the opening of New York’s first Biobehavioral Health Inpatient Unit, the first program for children with mental health needs and developmental disabilities in New York and one of only a handful in the nation.

Spiritual Care to host upcoming interfaith service of prayer and reflection
The Upstate community is invited to join the chaplains of Spiritual Care for a brief service of prayer, reflection and song to bring us together in growing compassion for ourselves, one another, our patients and our community Oct. 22 at noon in the Interfaith Chapel of Upstate University Hospital. The interfaith service Light in Times of Darkness: Finding our way together comes during National Spiritual Care Week October 20 to 26. A simple meal of bread, cheese and fruit will be available immediately following so those attending can break bread together and continue in fellowship.

Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital pumpkin decorating contest seeks submissions
Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital will host its annual pumpkin decorating contest complete with prizes and bragging rights. Pumpkins must be real and only uncarved pumpkins will be accepted. Pumpkin entries must be pre-registered to be entered into the contest. For full contest rules and drop-off instructions, email Maggie Burns at [email protected]. Once registered, pumpkins will be accepted Oct. 29 and voting will be held Oct. 30 and 31.

Purple Thursday for domestic violence awareness is today
Purple Thursday is today, Oct. 17 at Upstate and in our community. If you are wearing purple today, raise awareness of domestic violence and tag the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) in any post on social media. Flu and Covid vaccination clinic is today
and Oct. 22, 23, 25, 29, 31
Employee/Student Health will hold flu and Covid vaccine clinics, as there is an expected increase in cases this fall and winter. Influenza vaccine and an updated 24/25 Moderna Spikevax Covid vaccine will be offered. These clinics are by appointment only except for the dates noted with walk-in times. The schedule is as follows:
- Oct. 17 now until noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
- Oct. 22 from 7 a.m. to noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
- Oct. 23 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., 2W Upstate University Hospital (walk-ins 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. only)
- Oct. 25 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Employee Health at Community
- Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
- Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bubble Room, Weiskotten Hall
Flu and Covid vaccines are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. For those in clinical areas, the NYS health code requires a mask to be worn during flu season if you do not receive the flu vaccine. Those who receive the vaccine(s) elsewhere, upload the documentation to the ESH portal at https://eshportal.upstate.edu/ or email [email protected].

Upstate celebrates Spiritual Care Week Oct. 20 to 26
The following events will be held in celebration of Spiritual Care Week, recognized Oct. 20 to 26:
- Oct. 22 at Community: Rev. Kim and his team will round through all units at Community to distribute candy, fruit, and a blessing of the hands.
- Oct. 22 at Upstate University Hospital: A special prayer service at will be held at noon in the Interfaith Chapel, with the opportunity to break bread together following the service.
- Oct. 23 from 11:30 to 2 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital: Stop by to receive an inspirational stone, have your hands blessed, chat with a chaplain, or try Reiki at ‘The Chaplain Is In’ booth.
- Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participate in the annual Interfaith Works of CNY Spiritual Care Day training on addictions, held at May Memorial UU Fellowship. More information can be found at www.interfaithworkscny.org.
Upstate Spiritual Care is a 24/7 service, provided by board certified chaplains, chaplain interns, spiritual care volunteers, and coordinators of specialty services such as Reiki, the hospital choir, on-call clergy and Schwartz Center Compassionate Rounds. This year's theme is 'Chaplains Beyond Religious Roles,’ recognizing our collaboration with a variety of different professionals to provide holistic interdisciplinary care.

HealthLink on supporting someone with cancer is Oct. 23
Supporting a Person Who Has Cancer will be held Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom and in person at HealthLink/Oasis, 6333 State Route 298, E. Syracuse. Specialists from Upstate Cancer Center will discuss how to offer practical, emotional or spiritual support to someone with cancer, from the patient perspective. Pink in the Rink hockey game is Oct. 25
The Syracuse Crunch will host the annual Pink in the Rink hockey game Friday, Oct 25. Pink in the Rink will feature an Upstate Cancer Center information table in the concourse, in-game announcements, and a mystery puck fundraiser for She Matters. Schwartz Rounds is Oct. 29
Hidden Realities: Complexities and Challenges of Caring for Undocumented Patients will be held Oct. 29 at noon in 1076 A/B/C Upstate Cancer Center. Panelists will share personal experiences on the unique complexities and challenges of caring for undocumented patients, including legal, social, and economic barriers. They will also discuss their ways of providing compassionate, culturally competent care while navigating issues such as fear of deportation and limited access to healthcare resources. Personal stories will highlight the impact of these challenges on both patients and healthcare providers. Schwartz Rounds is open to staff of all departments and is intended to support the work we do by offering a compassionate listening environment. 1 CE hour for participants. Deadlines have been extended for the Health Justice Conference call for proposals and poster presentations. The call for proposals deadline is now Oct. 27. The deadline for poster presentations is Dec. 1. The Health Justice Conference is an annual student run conference that seeks to promote advocacy. This year's theme for is Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity. We invite proposals for presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions that delve into innovative strategies, research findings, and policy recommendations that promote health equity across various dimensions of identity and experience. Posters describing community projects related to health justice, literature reviews, research on health justice-related topics, or educational/clinical initiatives to promote health equity are encouraged. The New York State Office of Mental Health offers all employees an opportunity to practice various coping skills and strengthen their resilience through wellness groups. The groups include deep breathing and simulation exercises. Group sessions offer a warm, inviting space that fosters relaxation virtually and provides examples of calming techniques and basic coping skills. The group sessions are free, confidential, anonymous, and virtual employees can call in from any phone.
