Walk with a Doc is Oct. 12

Anna Shapiro MD, radiation oncologist at Upstate Cancer Center and an associate professor in radiation oncology, will lead Upstate’s Walk with a Doc event Saturday, Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. beginning at the Skate Park at Onondaga Lake Parkway. The event begins with a brief talk followed by a walk. Shapiro will speak on the role of exercise in breast cancer. The event is free and open to the public. Tranquility Tuesday is Oct. 15

Tranquility Tuesday will be held Tuesday, Oct. 15 (and every Tuesday) from 12:30 to 12:45 p.m. on the second floor of Nappi Wellness Institute or virtually via WebEx. Stand for the Kids is Oct. 16

The Phi Delta Epsilon Tau Chapter of Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine will host Stand for the Kids Oct. 16 from 6 a.m. to noon in the second-floor lobby of Upstate University Hospital. Stop by to receive a band aid to wear as a symbolic gesture to honor the patients at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and to hear inspirational patient stories. Proceeds from the fundraiser will support patients at Upstate Golisano through equipment, patient-focused services, and more, through a fund held at the Upstate Foundation. Volunteers sought for breakfast service at the Samaritan Center Oct. 16

Join members of Upstate Emerging Leaders United at the Samaritan Center (215 N. State St.), as the group helps with breakfast service Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6:15 to 9 a.m. The Samaritan Center mission is No One Goes Hungry. Flu and Covid vaccination clinics are Oct. 16, 17, 22, 23, 25, 29, 31

Employee/Student Health will hold flu and Covid vaccine clinics, as there is an expected increase in cases this fall and winter. Influenza vaccine and an updated 24/25 Moderna Spikevax Covid vaccine will be offered. These clinics are by appointment only except for the dates noted with walk-in times. The schedule is as follows:

  • Oct. 16 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., 2W Upstate University Hospital (walk-ins 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. only)
  • Oct. 17 from 7 a.m. to noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
  • Oct. 22 from 7 a.m. to noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
  • Oct. 23 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., 2W Upstate University Hospital (walk-ins 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. only)
  • Oct. 25 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Employee Health at Community
  • Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to noon, 2W Upstate University Hospital
  • Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bubble Room, Weiskotten Hall

Flu and Covid vaccines are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. For those in clinical areas, the NYS health code requires a mask to be worn during flu season if you do not receive the flu vaccine. Those who receive the vaccine(s) elsewhere, upload the documentation to the ESH portal at https://eshportal.upstate.edu/ or email [email protected]/. To schedule an appointment, visit the Employee/Student Health portal: https://eshportal.upstate.edu/. Flu and Covid vaccine appointments can also be made by calling 315-464-4260 (UUH) and 315-492-5624 (Community). The Flu Crew will provide after-hours (evening and night shift) flu vaccinations via mobile cart.

The Upstate Foundation’s Call In for Cancer is set for Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center. Upstate holds open house for employees to tour new mental health site for kids Oct. 18

Upstate employees are invited to attend an open house Friday, Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m., for the new Upstate Children’s Pavilion, 655 Madison St. The building, formerly part of Hutchings Psychiatric Center, expands Upstate’s mental health services for children, with the opening of New York’s first Biobehavioral Health Inpatient Unit.

HealthLink on supporting someone with cancer is Oct. 23

Supporting a Person Who Has Cancer will be held Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom and in person at HealthLink/Oasis, 6333 State Route 298, E. Syracuse. Specialists from Upstate Cancer Center will discuss how to offer practical, emotional or spiritual support to someone with cancer, from the patient perspective. They also will address tips for creating a care plan to help the patient manage their home, medical and self-care needs. The HealthLink seminar is open to patients, family, friends, caregivers. Domestic Violence Awareness events are Oct. 23 and 24

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Upstate will host Keep Growing events Oct. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in 2149 Nappi Wellness Institute and Oct. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community. PhD in biomedical sciences events are Oct. 25 and Nov. 6

Estate planning information available Oct. 31

In recognition of National Estate Planning Awareness week, the Upstate Foundation will offer information on getting your estate in order and making sure you have the right vital documents in place. A Foundation representative along with local attorney Tim Doolittle, Wladis Law Firm, will be available to share information and answer questions on Thursday, Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital. 18th annual Burn Run is Nov. 3

The 18th annual Burn Run will be held Sunday, Nov. 3 at the East Syracuse Fire Station #2, 148 Saunders Creek Parkway. Upstate’s Mobile Mammography Van will host an event for the Upstate family only, to include students, staff, volunteers, and family members. Health Justice Conference call for proposals and poster presentations

Deadlines have been extended for the Health Justice Conference call for proposals and poster presentations. The call for proposals deadline is now Oct. 27. The deadline for poster presentations is Dec. 1.

The Health Justice Conference is an annual student run conference that seeks to promote advocacy. This year's theme for is Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity. We invite proposals for presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions that delve into innovative strategies, research findings, and policy recommendations that promote health equity across various dimensions of identity and experience. Posters describing community projects related to health justice, literature reviews, research on health justice-related topics, or educational/clinical initiatives to promote health equity are encouraged.

Price Chopper Round Up Campaign: Price Chopper is a new partner to the Children’s Miracle Network hospital family. Make a donation now through Oct. 31 at a local Price Chopper. Donations come back to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.
