The Transitional Care Unit will hold a fundraiser to support its Clothing and Sundries Fund. Proceeds from the fundraiser are used to purchase clothing for patients in need of clothes when discharged from the hospital. Items will be shipped directly to purchaser. Flu and Covid vaccines are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. For those in clinical areas, the NYS health code requires a mask to be worn during flu season if you do not receive the flu vaccine.

Global Health to enroll staff and answer questions about new Covid study Oct. 3, 10, 17, 25
Upstate Global Health Institute will conduct a study to define the incidence and clinical spectrum of Covid-19 in a group of healthcare workers over a period of one respiratory virus season—fall and winter. Staff will be available to answer questions and enroll anyone interested. The schedule is as follows:
- Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., second floor student lounge in Weiskotten Hall
- Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon in 2153 Nappi Wellness Institute
- Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in classroom C at IHP

The study is open to all Upstate staff, seeks 500 participants, and will end June 2025. The study will characterize who gets sick, how long illness lasts, and how long others could be infected. The study will also look at responses to vaccination. For more information, email [email protected].

Biotech Equity Research session is Oct. 3
Benjamin J. Burnett, PhD, managing director of equity research at Stifel Investment Services will present Biotech Equity Research: Tracking the Promise (and Risk) of Early-Stage Companies Navigating the Public Markets Oct. 3 from 3 to 4 p.m. via Zoom. The intersection of early-stage life science companies and finance will be discussed. Also covered will be: recent capital market trends and forecasts, timing the market, and what it takes to become (and be) a public company. Matthews Auto Walkathon is Oct. 5
The sixth annual Matthews Auto Walkathon will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 virtually and in person from sunup to sundown at the Rail Trail in Vestal. The event benefits children’s charities, including Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Participants located in the Syracuse area are welcome to walk at any park or neighborhood. Matthews will donate $10 per mile walked to the charity of choice for each walker or divide miles equally among all charities (up to $75,000 total). Proposals are sought for the Health Justice Conference to be held Jan. 20. The annual Health Justice Conference is a student-run conference that seeks to promote advocacy. This year's theme is Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity. Proposals for presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions that delve into innovative strategies, research findings, and policy recommendations that promote health equity across various dimensions of identity and experience are welcome. The Sock Out Cancer concert will be held Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Broome County Forum in Binghamton. The event will feature Kevin Chalfant’s Journey Experience and Alyssa Crosby who competed on The Voice. The event benefits pediatric cancer patients at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Sock Out Cancer, LLC, is a nonprofit initiative whose mission is to assist financially distressed cancer patients and their families with non-medical necessities, such as food, transportation, and housing. Research study seeks healthy participants for one time blood draw
Upstate’s Endocrine Research Team seeks healthy participants ages 45 to 65 with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 kg/m2 for a one-time blood draw (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm). To be eligible, participants cannot have diabetes, or sleep apnea, or be taking any diabetes or weight loss medications, such as Ozempic/Wegovy. Global Health seeks participants for Lyme disease study
Upstate Global Health seeks participants seven years of age and older who have recently been diagnosed with Lyme disease and have a rash, or who have been evaluated by a practitioner and are suspected to have Lyme disease and developed a rash. The study will investigate Liaison LymeDetect, a new blood test, and its ability to detect Lyme disease quicker than traditional tests. Brain Stimulation Study Seeks Concussion Patients
Upstate seeks volunteers for a research study using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, as a novel treatment for chronic headaches and other post-concussion symptoms in people with mild traumatic brain injury. rTMS will be administered at the Institute for Human Performance. The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these Upstate specialists as they discuss the aging process, trauma in children and telehealth.
- Aging well, and a recent study showing that aging does not happen gradually, are eexplained by exercise physiologist Carol Sames, PhD.
- The job of the Pediatric Trauma Team – dealing with injuries to kids caused by cars, guns or other factors – is explained by pediatric surgeon Kim Wallenstein, MD, PhD, the team’s medical director.
- How telehealth – remotely communicating with a health care provider – works is discussed by Ruth Weinstock, MD, PhD, and Margie Greenfield. Weinstock is chief of endocrinology and Greenfield is a health information systems program manager.
