Two special lectures will be featured during Medical Reunion Oct. 13
This weekend’s Upstate’s Medical Reunion features two special lectures open to the Upstate community Oct. 13.
Oct. 13 at 8 a.m.: Welton M. Gersony, MD, Class of ’58, will present “The Evolution of the Diagnosis and Treatment for Congenital Heart Disease: An Extraordinary Journey” as part of the Welton M. Gersony, MD, Class or 1958 Pediatric Lectureship Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. in the Medical Alumni Auditorium in Weiskotten Hall. Gersony is the Alexander S. Nadas Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He served as director of Pediatric Cardiology at the combined Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital/Weill Medical College of Cornell program.
Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.: Robert B. Cady, MD, Class of ’71, will deliver the Weiskotten Lecture on the Haitian Clubfoot Program, its development and its struggle to survive Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. in Medical Alumni Auditorium. Cady is emeritus professor of orthopedics and pediatrics at Upstate Medical University.

Limited pairs of tickets available for Crunch home opener Oct. 14
To celebrate the Syracuse Crunch 30 th home opener, presented by Upstate University Hospital, Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m., several pairs of tickets are available to Upstate employees, students, and volunteers.
To enter, email your name and cell phone number to mascot@upstate.edu by Thursday, Oct. 12 at noon. Tickets will be drawn at random, and winners will be notified by email. If you do not have a cell phone to receive tickets digitally, please include “will call” in your email to pick up tickets before the game.

Making Strides is Oct. 15
Join Team Upstate at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Sunday, Oct. 15 in Clinton Square, Syracuse. Participants are welcome to start a team or join a team and help to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. As part of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, the Upstate Foundation will offer free information on getting your estate in order and making sure you have the right vital documents in place. Brian Zink, MD, senior associate dean for faculty and faculty development at University of Michigan Medical School and professor and senior associate chair for faculty development in the Department of Emergency Medicine, will present Anyone, Anything, Anytime: A History of U.S. Emergency Medicine.

Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club is Oct. 19
The Center for Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club will be held Oct. 19 at noon via Zoom. Deirdre Neilen, PhD, will lead the discussion on The Art of Medicine: Can True Reflection and Solidarity Further Beneficence? Discussion will begin with a consideration of Rodin’s famous The Thinker as seen in the Taran article, then move into a case study that focuses on a patient facing enormous challenges (medical, social, financial) in handling his disease. Traditionally, this patient would be labeled difficult or non-compliant, each visit leaving patient and clinician dissatisfied and frustrated. Perhaps by reconsidering what we value in the profession and in our lives, we can rediscover the joy of healing. Participants sought for charity curling event Nov. 4
Participants are sought for a one-day charity curling event to be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Utica Curling Club, 8300 Clark Mills Rd., Whitesboro, N.Y. Proceeds benefit Upstate’s Joslin Diabetes Center. Registration is $65 a person and includes day-of instruction and playing. The event is primarily focused on those who have never tried curling. The 17 th annual Burn Run will be held Sunday, Nov. 5 at 148 Saunders Creek Parkway in E. Syracuse.
