Psychiatry introduces Upstate Frame of Mind podcast

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has launched a podcast, Upstate Frame of Mind, now available on Spotify. In the first episode, Eric McMaster, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and program director of Upstate’s Child Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, discusses the minority stress hypothesis and the nuances of providing care for gender and sexual minority.

Applicants sought for Dr. Jessica Summers Memorial Scholarship Fund 

Applications are sought for the annual Dr. Jessica Summers Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship application is open to providers, residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses. The fund sponsors an individual’s mission trip to Honduras, as this work was Dr. Summers’ passion. The 2024 trip is set for Feb. 2 to 9. Deadline for Emerging Leaders United scholarship applications is Sep. 1

Upstate employees are welcome to apply for a scholarship for Upstate’s chapter of Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group with United Way of Central New York. Participants of the Emerging Leaders program will represent Upstate Medical University and have the opportunity to attend leadership and community education programs, volunteer events, and network with leaders from Syracuse businesses. Addressing Equity, Inclusion and Bias in Academic Medicine is the focus of a fall series of workshops beginning Sept. 27

Addressing Equity, Inclusion and Bias in Academic Medicine will be the focus of a fall series of workshops. The free presentations and accompanying debrief sessions are open to all Upstate faculty and staff. All sessions will be virtual. The presentations will feature Diana Lautenberger, director of Gender Equity Initiatives at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). 

• The first in the series will address Unconscious Bias in the Health Professions Sept. 27. This virtual presentation will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with a debriefing session set for Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
• The second presentation in the series will address Confronting Dominant Culture to Create Inclusive Environments and Belonging on Oct. 25, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with a debriefing session set for Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.
• A third presentation will feature Allyship, Bystander Intervention and Responding to Microaggressions; it will be held Nov. 1 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with a debrief session on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.
• The fourth presentation will highlight Understanding Gender Bias Today and Solutions to Address. It will be held Jan. 31, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A debrief session for this presentation will be held Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.

Clark Burn Center Trivia Night is Sept. 28

Clark Burn Center’s Trivia Night will be held Thursday, Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Crazy Daisies Flowers and Garden Café, 4693 Kasson Rd., Syracuse. Honorary degree submissions sought 

Upstate's Honorary Degree Committee invites nominations for 2024 Honorary Degree candidates. An honorary doctorate degree is "...the highest form of recognition offered by the SUNY Board of Trustees to persons of exceptional distinction."  All students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit letters of nomination with the rationale for the nomination, and a summary of the candidate's accomplishments and contributions. These should be brief, no more than two pages. The deadline to submit is Monday, Sept. 25. The Informed Patient podcast 

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these Upstate specialists about the dangers of fungal infections, cancer survivors and pancreas-only transplants.

• Ramiro Gutiérrez, MD, talks about fungal infections and the particular risk they pose to people with weakened immune systems. He is deputy chief of infectious disease.
• Susan Tiffany explains people who complete their cancer treatment enter into a new stage called survivorship. She is a registered nurse certified in oncology nursing at the Upstate Cancer Center.
• Organ transplant chief Reza Saidi, MD, discusses how pancreas transplants, done without a simultaneous kidney transplant, can resolve some cases of diabetes. (Pancreas transplants are generally done in tandem with a kidney transplant.)
