Memorial service for Danielle Jones is April 12

A memorial service for Danielle Jones will be held today, April 12 at 9 a.m. in the Interfaith Chapel, first floor of Upstate University Hospital. The memorial service for Jones, a SICU nurse and 2018 Upstate Employee of the Year, was organized by the SICU and Spiritual Care. Bring stories to share. The service is open to the Upstate community.

Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club is April 13

The Bioethics and Humanities Journal Club will be held April 13 at noon via Zoom. Stephanie Tillman, CNM, FACNM, is the special guest. Tillman is a midwife, educator, writer, and activist. Donate Life Month T-shirt sale is April 13 and 27

Upstate will host events throughout April in celebration of Donate Life Month, including a T-shirt sale April 13 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 at Upstate University Hospital and in the cafeteria at Community. Shirts are $20. Additional events are listed below. 

  • April 14—Wear blue and green to support National Donate Life Month. Snap photos (masks on if more than one person) and email to Michelle Lonkey at LonkeyM@Upstate.edu or Tracey Wilcox at WilcoxT@Upstate.edu by April 20.

Upstate Cancer Center will host Spring Fling, a mini-health fair April 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. Bioethics and Humanities Reiss Family Lectureship events are April 13 and 14

Upstate’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities will host the inaugural Reiss Family Lectureship in Ethics and Equity April 13 and 14 in person and online. This inaugural event will feature Stephanie Tillman, CNM, a nationally-recognized expert on trauma-informed care and reproductive justice. Tillman will present three talks. The schedule is as follows: 

  • April 13 from 8 to 9 a.m. in 103 Weiskotten Hall and online. CME credits will be available. Topic: Trauma-Informed Intimate Exams: (re)Considering Consent
  • April 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room at Salt City Market. Topic: Trauma-Informed Abortion Care: Community Partnerships
  • April 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 2244 Academic Building and online. CE credit will be available. Topic: Trauma-Informed Care Scripting: A Case Study of Chaperones for Intimate Examinations

Silent auction donation items due April 14

A Donate Life virtual silent auction will be held from April 17 through 21. Donations are sought for the auction and submissions are due by April 14. Prizes will be awarded to the most creative, most lucrative, and best theme auction item. To arrange to have a donation picked up, call 315-464-9093 or email Shortsle@upstate.edu. Proceeds from the auction will be used to promote organ donation, educate the public on the donation process, and register new donors.

Joey’s Wish Spring Fling is April 15

Joey’s Wish Spring Fling will be held April 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the VFW in Mattydale. The event will feature a DJ, food trucks, vendors, raffles, a Karaoke contest, and more. Tickets are $20 and a portion of ticket sales will benefit the Upstate Foundation. All are welcome.

Concussion Symposium to be held April 17

Upstate’s fourth annual Concussion Symposium will be held April 17 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Institute for Human Performance. Concussion Through the Continuum: Current Concepts in Managing Acute Injury to Complex Recovery will offer CME credits to participants. Registration is $50; $10 for students. Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held April 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B Upstate University Hospital. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, or vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. Chaplain intern graduation is April 20

Spiritual Care will host a graduation celebration for the five chaplain interns in Upstate’s Clinical Pastoral Education training program April 20 at noon in the Interfaith Chapel, first floor of Upstate University Hospital. The celebration will be followed by a light lunch and the graduation will be broadcast on channel 52. Graduates include: Father Immanuel Agbulu (8F/G), Father Paschal Anionye (Community), Jeremiah Deep (7A), Rev. Brian Fellows (8E) and Linda Mulrooney (MICU).

Kick Butts Earth Day is April 21

The Tobacco-Free Task Force will host Kick Butts Earth Day Friday, April 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon beginning in the lobby of Upstate Cancer Center and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the main lobby of Community. Help beautify our outdoor spaces by cleaning up cigarette butts and other litter. Clean-up will happen rain or shine, and grabbers will be provided. Pathway to Wellness events are April 25, 27, 28

  • What is Upstate KAREs? Is April 25 at noon. Joey Angelina will discuss Upstate KAREs, a new wellness hotline established for anyone with an Upstate ID. Angelina will explain the hotline, the services it provides, and what happens when someone calls 315-464-KARE. 
  • Mindful Leader—Micro Meditation on Sound is April 27 at 2 p.m. Take five minutes to practice focusing on sound, a gentle practice to help with focus and mindfulness. 
  • Get into the Zone with Emotional Intelligence is April 28 at noon. Mickey Lebowitz, MD, will discuss emotional intelligence, EI, and the zone. He will provide tips to help get someone back into the zone.

Upstate Cancer Center FRC Open House is April 27

Sarah Lawler, clinical outreach librarian, will host an open house April 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Family Resource Center on the first floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Lawler will share information about the services she provides patients and their families. Attendees will receive a special book. T-shirt sale is April 28

In recognition of April as Sarcoidosis Awareness Month, T-shirts will be sold April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second-floor lobby at Upstate University Hospital. The sale is hosted by Upstate Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep division.

Advocates for Upstate annual meeting and luncheon is May 2

The Upstate community is invited to the Advocates for Upstate annual meeting and luncheon May 2 at the Collegian Hotel and Suites, 1060 E. Genesee St. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.; luncheon and program begins at noon. Registration is $15 and R.S.V.P. is required by April 26. To purchase tickets, visit: https://advocates-for-upstate.square.site/. President Dewan will serve as guest speaker. The event includes a presentation of awards and recognitions. New and retiring board members will be honored. Donations of items for patient activity carts are encouraged: travel-sized toiletries, small boxes of colored pencils, and bibles. Advocates for Upstate supports healthcare and scholarship through fundraising and service including through departmental grants and scholarships for Upstate staff and volunteers.

On My Own Time submissions due May 12

Upstate staff are invited to submit up to three pieces of their original visual art, created in the last 3 years, to the On My Own Time exhibit to be held at the Health Sciences Library. Several pieces from this exhibit will be selected to be part of a month-long finale exhibit at Everson Museum of Art this fall. To register, email Laura Benjamin at nemitzl@upstate.edu. April is National Occupational Therapy Month

Occupational Therapy Month is celebrated in April each year. Upstate has 64 occupational therapists and OT assistants who work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings throughout Upstate’s campuses. OTs focus on rebuilding a patient’s ability to complete the everyday tasks of living, promote health, and support independence.

The Office of Professional Development and Learning seeks applications from interprofessional employees who would like to join Upstate’s mentoring program. The program is a 12-month commitment beginning July 1. To be considered as a mentee—someone wishing to be matched with a mentor—submit an application by April 30. Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is observed nationally in April each year. The mission of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual assault and to educate and empower individuals to take action to prevent it from happening in our community. Sexual violence affects everyone. Whether you are a student, educator, administrator, coworker, parent, or friend, we all can make a difference by recognizing the warning signs of sexual violence. The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) has gathered information to assist in awareness efforts. SUNY Campus Climate Survey to take place in April 

SUNY Upstate maintains a deep commitment to addressing and preventing sexual and interpersonal violence on campus, and understanding the climate is an important step in this process. We will conduct the biennial SUNY Campus Climate Survey from April 10 to 30 to better understand Upstate Community members’ experiences with sexual and interpersonal violence, and their awareness of policies, reporting options, and support services available on and off campus. Hearing the experiences and perspectives from as many folks as possible is critical in our effort. Campus community members will receive the link to the survey in an email from Survey@suny.edu. To demonstrate legitimacy and guard against spam or false emails, the Climate Survey email will include the first name of the recipient and be sent to the e-mail address they maintain on file with their campus.
