April is Donate Life Month
Upstate will host events throughout April in celebration of Donate Life Month.
- Now through April 14—Donations are sought for the Donate Life Silent Auction. To donate, contact Erin Shortslef at ShortslE@Upstate.edu or 315-464-9093.
- April 13 and 27—Donate Life Month T-shirt sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Café 750 at Upstate University Hospital and in the cafeteria at Community. Shirts are $20.
- April 14—Wear blue and green to support National Donate Life Month. Snap photos (masks on if more than one person) and email to Michelle Lonkey at LonkeyM@Upstate.edu or Tracey Wilcox at WilcoxT@Upstate.edu by April 20.
- April 17 to 21—Upstate’s annual Donate Life Silent Auction to support the Donor Fund will be held online here: https://tschu8482.wixsite.com/silentauction.
- April 21—Donate Life T-shirt sale will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Performance Center of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Applicants sought for Upstate’s mentoring program
The Office of Professional Development and Learning seeks applications from interprofessional employees who would like to join Upstate’s mentoring program. The program is a 12-month commitment beginning July 1. To be considered as a mentee—someone wishing to be matched with a mentor—submit an application by April 30. National Public Health Week celebration at Community is this week
In recognition of National Public Health Week, held the first week of April, informational tables will be featured this week from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Upstate Community Hospital. The schedule for topics, displays and education is as follows.
- April 4: parenting, child abuse, tobacco use solutions, staff wellbeing, herbs and spices, healthy eating, CPR/AED education, trauma response.
- April 5: advanced directives, Oasis and HealthLink, healthy relationships and sexual assault, kidney health, poison prevention, Upstate Triage, and Public Health Hotline.
- April 6: Bee Campus information, volunteerism, opioid use disorder education, spiritual care and reiki.

Mentors sought for Mercy Works/Synergy interns
Upstate staff are sought to serve as mentors to support high-achieving college students this summer through the Mercy Works/Synergy Summer Internship Program.
Upstate provides real work experience and practical learning for local students who bring innovative ideas, up-to-date skills, and new perspectives as they pursue their career interests in the medical field.

Collection drive for Your Cause 2023 charity ends April 7
Upstate’s 2023 Your Cause charity recipient is Francis House, a hospice home to individuals with terminal illnesses. Upstate will hold a collection drive for key items until April 7. For a complete list of collection boxes, visit: https://www.upstate.edu/specialevents/collection-drive.php.
Products needed most are: unscented baby wipes, brownie mixes, Chapstick and lip balms, coffee, cookie mix, dry soup packets, fabric softener, Febreze air freshener spray linen and sky, grocery store gift cards, fruit, granola bars, juices (64 ounces), paper towels, protein bars, and surgical masks.

Property Management Surplus Warehouse is now closed, will relocate April 7
The Property Management Surplus Warehouse, formerly located at 160 Ainsley Dr., will relocate and open April 7 at a new location: 1001 East Water St. Warehouse hours will be Fridays from 8 to 11 a.m. and parking will be located on the Erie Blvd. side of the building. HealthLink seminar on patient portal use is April 11
My Wellness Journey: Accessing Your Patient Portal and Reading Visit Notes to Enhance Care will be held April 11 at 6 p.m. at HealthLink/Oasis, 6333 Carrier Parkway, E. Syracuse. The seminar will also be available via Zoom.
Learn how to make the most of your health care visits by being an engaged part of your health care team. The HealthLink session will include use of a new Upstate patient education tool, My Wellness Journal, to assist with healthcare, self-care and wellness. Attendees will receive a printed copy of My Wellness Journal to use.

REACH mental health workshop is April 13
Upstate’s mental health initiative REACH will hold a workshop April 13 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. REACH, funded by the Patrick Lee Foundation from Buffalo, NY, aims to increase the capacity of primary and family medicine providers of all profiles (MD, DO, NP, PA) in Central New York to systematically screen, identify, treat, and refer patients suffering from mental health disorders. The program is free for all participants and the intensive workshop is awarded 6.00 AMA PRA category 1 credits. Bioethics and Humanities Reiss Family Lectureship events are April 13 and 14
Upstate’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities will host the inaugural Reiss Family Lectureship in Ethics and Equity April 13 and 14 in person and online. This inaugural event will feature Stephanie Tillman, CNM, a nationally-recognized expert on trauma-informed care and reproductive justice. Tillman will present three talks. The schedule is as follows:

Silent auction donation items due April 14
A Donate Life virtual silent auction will be held from April 17 through 21. Donations are sought for the auction and submissions are due by April 14. Proceeds from the auction will be used to promote organ donation, educate the public on the donation process, and register new donors.

Joey’s Wish Spring Fling is April 15
Joey’s Wish Spring Fling will be held April 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the VFW in Mattydale. The event will feature a DJ, food trucks, vendors, raffles, a Karaoke contest, and more. Tickets are $20 and a portion of ticket sales will benefit the Upstate Foundation. All are welcome.

Sarah Lawler, clinical outreach librarian, will host an open house April 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Family Resource Center on the first floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Lawler will share information about the services she provides patients and their families. Attendees will receive a special book. - Humor for 10 minutes is April 11 at 2 p.m. Laughter is the best medicine and April is stress month.
- What is Upstate KAREs? Is April 25 at noon. Joey Angelina will discuss Upstate KAREs, a new wellness hotline established for anyone with an Upstate ID. Angelina will explain the hotline, the services it provides, and what happens when someone calls 315-464-KARE.
- Mindful Leader—Micro Meditation on Sound is April 27 at 2 p.m. Take five minutes to practice focusing on sound, a gentle practice to help with focus and mindfulness.
- Get into the Zone with Emotional Intelligence is April 28 at noon. Mickey Lebowitz, MD, will discuss emotional intelligence, EI, and the zone. He will provide tips to help get someone back into the zone.

Advocates for Upstate annual meeting and luncheon is May 2
The Upstate community is invited to the Advocates for Upstate annual meeting and luncheon May 2 at the Collegian Hotel and Suites, 1060 E. Genesee St. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.; luncheon and program begins at noon. Registration is $15 and R.S.V.P. is required by April 26. President Dewan will serve as guest speaker. The event includes a presentation of awards and recognitions. New and retiring board members will be honored. Donations of items for patient activity carts are encouraged: travel-sized toiletries, small boxes of colored pencils, and bibles.
Advocates for Upstate supports healthcare and scholarship through fundraising and service including through departmental grants and scholarships for Upstate staff and volunteers.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is observed nationally in April each year. The mission of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual assault and to educate and empower individuals to take action to prevent it from happening in our community. Sexual violence affects everyone. Whether you are a student, educator, administrator, coworker, parent, or friend, we all can make a difference by recognizing the warning signs of sexual violence.
The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) has gathered information to assist in awareness efforts. SUNY Campus Climate Survey to take place in April
SUNY Upstate maintains a deep commitment to addressing and preventing sexual and interpersonal violence on campus, and understanding the climate is an important step in this process. We will conduct the biennial SUNY Campus Climate Survey from April 10 to 30 to better understand Upstate Community members’ experiences with sexual and interpersonal violence, and their awareness of policies, reporting options, and support services available on and off campus. Hearing the experiences and perspectives from as many folks as possible is critical in our effort.
Campus community members will receive the link to the survey in an email from Survey@suny.edu. To demonstrate legitimacy and guard against spam or false emails, the Climate Survey email will include the first name of the recipient and be sent to the e-mail address they maintain on file with their campus.
