HealthLink seminar on low back pain and the role of physical therapy is March 23

Steven Lounsbury, PT, DPT, CSCS, CAFS, will present on back pain and how physical therapy can help. Topics include when to see a doctor, what treatments are available, and how a physical therapist can assist with pain relief and recurrence. Collection drive for Your Cause 2023 charity begins March 27

Upstate’s 2023 Your Cause charity recipient is Francis House, a hospice home to individuals with terminal illnesses. Upstate will hold a collection drive for key items from March 27 to April 7.

Products needed most are: unscented baby wipes, brownie mixes, Chapstick and lip balms, coffee, cookie mix, dry soup packets, fabric softener, Febreze air freshener spray linen and sky, grocery store gift cards, fruit, granola bars, juices (64 ounces) paper towels, protein bars, and surgical masks.

Deadline for Flex Spending claim submissions is March 31

Employees who contributed to a Flex Spending Account in 2022 must submit all unpaid claims no later than March 31, 2023 for all qualifying expenses incurred from Jan. 1, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2022. Any remaining funds up to the IRS limit from the previous year will then carry over into the current plan year’s account balance with our new administrator after the runout period end date. Pet a Pooch seeks session supervisors beginning April 5

Upstate’s Wellness Program has scheduled Pet a Pooch animal support sessions each month to help staff de-stress. Session supervisors are sought to escort the dog volunteers and their humans to designated locations and stay with them during the sessions. REACH mental health workshop is April 13

Upstate’s mental health initiative REACH will hold a workshop April 13 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. REACH, funded by the Patrick Lee Foundation from Buffalo, NY, aims to increase the capacity of primary and family medicine providers of all profiles (MD, DO, NP, PA) in Central New York to systematically screen, identify, treat, and refer patients suffering from mental health disorders. 

The educational program comprises of a one-day intense workshop followed by optional biweekly electronic education (one hour) using the Project ECHO platform where providers can join and discuss cases from their practice with our faculty.

The program is free for all participants and the intensive workshop is awarded 6.00 AMA PRA category 1 credits. Upstate seeks volunteers for CMV infection study

Upstate seeks volunteers for a clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of a new Moderna mRNA CMV vaccine in healthy adolescents and adult females 16 to 40 years of age. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes asymptomatic infection and mononucleosis-like illness in healthy adults. Congenital CMV occurs in 30-35 percent of mothers who acquire primary CMV infection during pregnancy. Maternal infection in the first half of pregnancy is associated with the highest risk for severe manifestations of congenital CMV in the infant. Currently, no vaccine is available to prevent CMV infection.

All visits take place at the Physicians Office Building and include 14 in-person visits over a 30-month period with safety phone contacts between visits. Direct exposure to a child 5 and under for at least 8 hours per week is required. Visits include vaccinations, blood draws, urine pregnancy tests. Participants are required to keep an e-Diary on a smartphone app to track any adverse effects throughout the study; Devices are provided to those who do not have one.Participants will be compensated for scheduled and unscheduled completed visits.

The Informed Patient podcast

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews on how to reverse certain drug overdoses, the needs of hospitalized teens, and how empathy can be lost during dementia.

• Using naloxone to reverse an opioid overdose is explained by toxicologist Ross Sullivan, MD, who also discusses the nasal spray version of the drug. He is the director of medical toxicology at Upstate.
• The unique needs of hospitalized adolescents are discussed by pediatricians Karen Teelin, MD, and Jennifer Myszewski, DO. Teelin is director of adolescent medicine at Upstate, and Myszewski is a pediatric hospitalist at the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. 
• How dementia can sometimes cause a loss of empathy was studied by postdoctoral researcher Hannah Phillips, PhD, who outlines the findings of her research. She led a research team in the lab of Wei-Dong Yao at Upstate.
