State of the University Address rescheduled

President Dewan’s State of the University Address, originally set for today, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at 4 p.m. The address will be held in the Medical Alumni Auditorium in Weiskotten Hall. In addition to the address, the event will feature the presentation of the inaugural Upstate Council Awards for Exemplary Service. The event also will be streamed live; link to be sent prior to the address. The Upstate Community is invited to attend.

County health assessment survey

Upstate is part of Onondaga County’s Health Equity Task Force. The task force invites the Upstate community to take the county’s community health assessment survey—offered every three years to assess needs of residents. Sexual Assault Awareness Month bystander training is today

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Upstate will offer two workshops on bystander training, in partnership with Vera House. Virtual bystander training will be held today, April 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Vera House will present. Primary Care Task Force education session is April 14

Anuradha Duleep, MD, and Carlos Muniz, MD, MSc, will present Managing Seizures in the Primary Care Setting April 14 at 8 a.m. via Zoom. Primary care providers will learn more about the approach to seizures in adult patients, and when a referral is your best course of action. Content will include diagnosis and practical management, referring to Upstate Neurology, and a Q and A. The presentation will be recorded and posted for Upstate clinicians once complete. Donate Life Month T-shirt sales are April 14

Donate Life T-shirts will be available for purchase April 14 and 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second-floor lobby of Upstate University Hospital. Upstate Community Hospital will hold a sale April 14 in the cafeteria and April 22 in the community room, both from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

National Volunteer Week begins April 17

Upstate thanks its hundreds of volunteers for their work during National Volunteer Week, beginning April 17. Upstate volunteers greet and transport patients, help with Book Buddies and the Family Resource Center at Upstate Golisano, make deliveries, and run errands to support Upstate staff. Thank a volunteer this month.

Donate Life Silent Auction is April 18 to 22

Upstate’s Organ Donor Council will host the annual Donate Life Silent Auction April 18 to 22. The silent auction will be held online. All proceeds benefit the Donor Fund and are used to help promote organ donation and registration efforts. Kick Butts Earth Day event is April 22

The Tobacco-Free Task Force will host Kick Butts Earth Day Friday, April 22 at 10 a.m. beginning in the atrium of Upstate Cancer Center. Join the team to clean up cigarette butts on the Upstate campus and clear the air at Upstate, as tobacco use is not permitted anywhere on campus. Heart Walk is April 24

The American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk will be held April 24 at 10 a.m. Join Upstate’s Stroke Team here: https://www2.heart.org/goto/upstatestrokecenter. Participants who register and donate $35 will receive a free long-sleeved T-shirt.

Spring into Wellness is April 25

A mini-health fair will be held April 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the atrium of Upstate Cancer Center. Information will be available on a variety of programs, including: financial counseling, nutrition counseling, spiritual care, survivorship, smoking cessation, We Matter, She Matters, and more. The Upstate community is welcome. Masks are required.

Volunteers sought for spring cleanup April 29

The Upstate community is invited to help Sarah’s guest House, Upstate’s 2022 Your Cause partner, with spring cleanup. To volunteer, email Susan Bland at BLANDmeS@upstate.edu or Kelly Dolan at dolank@upstate.edu. Shifts will run from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. Wear a Team Upstate shirt, if possible. Sarah’s Guest House is a local 501C3 charity whose mission is to provide lodging, transportation, meals and comfort to patients and families receiving medical care in Central New York. The house is the only healthcare hospitality house for adults in Central New York.

April is National Records and Information Awareness Management Month

When you see one or all of Upstate’s Record Storage Team members, please thank them for their service. Records and Information Management Month (RIMM) is celebrated internationally during the month of April to highlight the significant impact records management has on organizations. The purpose is to emphasize the value and importance of organizing and maintaining records and data for the efficient and effective management of information.

Advocates fundraiser for Upstate

Want to throw out a first pitch at a Syracuse Mets game this season? Participate in Advocates for Upstate’s drawing to win a Syracuse Mets First Pitch Experience gift basket valued at $150. Proceeds will go toward the Advocates’ grant funding program to benefit programs and services at Upstate University Hospital and Upstate Community Hospital. The experience also includes four game tickets, a food voucher, and free parking. In addition, a baseball, a shirt fan finger and more have been added to the basket. The raffle will be held through Friday, April 29 at 11:30 a.m. with the drawing to take place at noon the same day. The winner will be randomly selected and contacted by email or telephone immediately following the drawing. Tickets are $5 each or three tickets for $10. Advocates annual luncheon is May 3

The Upstate community is invited to attend the annual meeting and luncheon of the Advocates for Upstate May 3 at noon at the Collegian Hotel, 1060 E. Genesee St. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and a business meeting for members will be held at 11:45 a.m. Upstate University Hospital CEO Robert Corona, DO, MBA, is the guest speaker. Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, May 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B Upstate University Hospital. Everyone with an Upstate ID is welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. Volunteers sought for Global Health trial

Upstate’s Institute for Global Health seeks healthy volunteers ages 18 to 55 for a dengue prevention trial. You may be compensated for your time and travel. Why Volunteer? Dengue mosquitoes are found throughout the world including warmer parts of the US. Dengue makes over 100 million people sick around the world every year. Dengue is a risk to our US service members when they deploy overseas. Upstate is working closely with partners to develop a method to protect people from dengue fever.
