President Dewan to deliver State of the University Address April 13 at 4 p.m.

Upstate President Mantosh Dewan, MD, will deliver his State of the University Address Wednesday, April 13 at 4 p.m. in room 4414 of the Academic Building. The event also will be streamed live; link to be sent prior to the address. In addition to the address, the event will feature the presentation of the inaugural Upstate Council Awards for Exemplary Service. The Upstate Community is invited to attend.

National Doctors’ Day is March 30

The Upstate Foundation, as part of its Grateful Patient and Family Program, will celebrate its 11th National Doctors’ Day March 30 by distributing tributes that Upstate patients sent to their doctors for their dedication to providing quality and compassionate health care to our community. Flex Spending Account deadline is March 31

Individuals enrolled in a Flexible Spending Account in 2021 have until March 31, 2022 to submit 2021 expenses for reimbursement. For more information on Flex Spending, visit: https://goer.ny.gov/program-information. Participants can use up to $550 from the 2021 Health Care Spending Account toward eligible expenses incurred in 2022, if the account was active/open as of Dec. 31, 2021. Participants are now able to use the remaining balance in a 2021 Dependent Care Advantage Account (DCAA) toward eligible expenses incurred during the 2022 calendar year.

Retirement reception for Abbie Sousie is April 1

A retirement reception for Abbie Sousie will be held April 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Performance Center on the 11th floor of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Sousie retires from pediatrics after 40 years of service.

Neuro Research Day is April 1

Upstate’s Department of Neurosurgery, in collaboration with the Neuroscience Graduate Program, will sponsor a symposium presented by various Upstate faculty and residents on basic and clinical neuroscience research at Neuro Research Day 2022, Friday, April 1 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in 2231 Weiskotten Hall and via Zoom.

Invited speakers and their presentations include:

  • 10 a.m.: Sameer Sheth, MD/PhD, associate professor of neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine, will discuss deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders. 
  • 11:10 a.m. Anusha Mishra, PhD, assistant professor of neurology, medicine and anesthesiology at Oregon Health and Science University will discuss the role of astrocytes in neurovascular coupling in health and disease. 
  • 2:30 p.m. Susan Ackerman, PhD, professor of biology at University of California San Diego, will discuss mRNA translation and neurons-when things go awry.

Peer supporter training will be held Monday, April 4 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The program is open to all who are interested in becoming a peer supporter. Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B Upstate University Hospital. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. Upstate Cancer Center at Community ribbon cutting is April 5

A ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of Upstate Cancer Center at Community will be held April 5 at 10 a.m. at Community. Student Research Day is April 6 

Poster session to be held in person; masks required

Student Research Day will be held April 6 via WebEx (poster session to be held in person). Keynote address will feature Prachee Avasthi, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and cell biology at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

Student talks from the colleges of Medicine, Health Professions and Graduate Studies will begin at 1 p.m., keynote begins at 3 p.m.

The poster session will be held in person from 4 to 6 p.m. in 4414 Academic Building. Masks are required.

Upstate’s Inclusive Health Services offers free yoga classes

Upstate’s Inclusive Health Services will host free virtual queer yoga with HK Goldstein every Tuesday during April at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome. To register online, visit: https://bit.ly/3s8lO0E. April is Occupational Therapy Month

Occupational therapy is an essential piece of the Upstate community at several locations. Upstate employees 54 occupational therapists at Upstate University Hospital, Community, IHP and Manlius. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help individuals participate in activities they want or need to do through therapeutic use of everyday activities, also known as occupations. Help celebrate the profession by thanking an Upstate occupational therapist in April.
