Donate Life Month silent auction online now through Friday

Upstate’s Donate Life silent online auction is open through Friday at www.upstate.edu/donorsilentauction. Winning bidders will be notified by April 30. Lori’s Gift Shop expands hours

Lori’s Gift Shop in the lobby of Upstate University Hospital will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. beginning April 19. In celebration of National Volunteer Week, all Upstate volunteers will be eligible for 30 percent discounts on their purchases the week of April 19.

2021 Celebration of the Faculty is today

The 14th Annual Celebration of the Faculty will be held virtually today, April 20 at 5 p.m. New faculty members will be welcomed and faculty who have been promoted, tenured or emeritus will be celebrated. Recipients of the 2021 Gold Standard Awards will be honored. The award is presented to faculty members who demonstrate excellence, commitment, passion and integrity in their service to Upstate. Community Campus Blood Drive is April 21 

A blood drive will be held Wednesday, April 21 from 12 until 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community Campus. To schedule an appointment, go to www.upstate.edu/blood. Donors up to age 24 will receive a $10 e-gift card and all donors will receive a free cookie coupon from DiBella’s Subs.

Earth Day is April 22

Earth Day is April 22. At Upstate, we have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership through our sustainability practices that will improve patient outcomes, improve the workforce environment and reduce use of resources.

Reduce, reuse and recycle: Recycling is a great way to help the environment. It reduces disposal costs and reroutes items from the landfills. In 2020, Upstate recycled over 1,100 tons of material. You can do your part. Upstate has over 250 large recycling containers throughout both campuses. Recycle items like newspapers, magazines, cardboard, paper, juice and milk cartons, plastic bottles and jugs (empty with cap), cans and jars (rinsed),p lastic dairy tubs (rinsed, no lids). For more information, visit: www.upstate.edu/green/recycling/recycle_this.php.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week runs through April 23

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Celebrated by hospitals and clinical laboratories throughout the country, the purpose of this annual event is to recognize laboratory professionals and educate clinicians and the public about their role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This is especially important this year in light of the meaningful work our staff has done related to COVID-19. Upstate’s Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics labs have performed over 165,000 COVID-19 tests. Dedicated staff from Upstate laboratories helped to meet the high demand for COVID testing while maintaining timely and efficient operations for the rest of our lab sections. The 2021 Lab Week is a time to celebrate the tremendous work of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and their contributions to supporting the mission of Upstate Medical University.

Vera House workshops are April 23 and 28

The Upstate community is invited to join Vera House April 23 and 28 for two virtual presentations on sexual assault and bystander intervention. The workshops are offered as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The Sexual Assault Awareness Workshop will be held Friday, April 23 from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m. via Zoom. The workshop will provide an overview of sexual assault, consent, power and control dynamics. The conversation will also include resources and information on what to do when facing sexual assault.  

The Bystander Intervention Workshop will be held Wednesday, April 28 from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The workshop will provide a dialogue on the knowledge and skills needed to act as an empowered bystander. Bystander behaviors, barriers to intervention, and support resources will be discussed.

Project ECHO clinic focusing on organ transplant is May 3

Reza Saidi, MD, will present a Project ECHO session May 3. With a focus on primary and family medicine providers, the session will address transplant issues that can be managed in provider offices, including: tests to run, how to read/interpret certain lab results, medications that can be beneficial, management after transplant, living donations, transplant candidacy, and more. 13th annual Cazenovia Hillbender is May 8

Volunteers sought

The 13th annual Cazenovia Hillbender will be held May 8 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Cazenovia Ski Club near Chittenango Falls. The event, a 19- or 38-mile bike race benefits the Madeline Cote Fund. The fund, held at the Upstate Foundation, supports the Golisano Center for Special Needs’ inclusive fitness programs and adaptive design for children and young adults with physical and developmental disabilities. Easy for You is May 11

Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, May 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 7335B of the west wing at Upstate University Hospital. Those with an Upstate ID are welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement therapy is available. She Matters mini-health fair is May 20

The Upstate She Matters program will host a mini-health fair in collaboration with Molina Healthcare May 20 from noon to 3 p.m. at Syracuse Housing Authority, 1100 S. McBride Street. The event aims to celebrate Women’s Health Month, recognized in May, and will have display tables spaced six feet apart. Masks will be required.

Information about the following programs and centers will be available: She Matters, We Matter, Molina Healthcare, Upstate Cancer Center, Upstate Stroke Center, Upstate Healthy Neighbors Chronic Disease, National Black Leadership Commission on Health-Syracuse Chapter.

She Matters will offer mammography screening during the health fair for women who pre-register by calling 315-484-4237. Screenings will take place at 550 Harrison.

During the first week of May, all Upstate employees will receive an email with information about making a contribution to the Upstate Foundation’s annual The Power of Us employee giving program. Support Upstate by donating to one or more of the Foundation’s 1000 funds that benefit patient care, education and research.
