Upstate Nursing to host annual Spring Hiring Event Feb. 13

Upstate Nursing will host its annual Spring Hiring Event Feb. 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza in Syracuse. Managers will be on hand to meet with new and experienced RNs and recruiters will be available to discuss Upstate’s new RN salary package. Nursing Grand Rounds is Feb. 18

Colleen Lupia MSN, RN-CCM; Allison Dodge CSPHA; and Rebecca Ossevoort MS, ATC, MS, ATC, will present Safe Patient Handling: Slide Through Work Without Getting Hurt Tuesday, Feb. 18 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Performance Center at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. The presentation will be streamed live to Classroom A and B at Community and will be videotaped for post-presentation online viewing within the NGR blackboard course #3490: Nursing Grand Rounds. Nursing Recruitment will host Walk-In Wednesdays Feb. 19 and 26 from noon to 4 p.m. in 1414 Upstate University Hospital and in the Human Resources office on the first floor of Upstate Community Hospital. RN candidates will have an opportunity to interview with recruiters on the spot and learn about Upstate’s new RN salary package. RNs interested in open positions should bring an updated resume. Black History Month celebration is Feb. 26

Upstate will celebrate Black History Month Feb. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Community Hospital with a keynote address presented by Malika Carter, PhD, and a free soul food lunch with vegan options prepared by Miss Prissy’s Inc. Yvette Mike, RN, will read poetry and Lauren Ligon, LMSW, will provide musical entertainment. Upstate Foundation’s 17th annual Radiothon for Kids is Feb. 27 and 28

The Upstate Foundation’s 17th annual Radiothon for Kids will be held Feb. 27 and 28 from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the main lobby of Upstate University Hospital. The event will be broadcast live on Y94, 570 WSYR, and CNY Central. Volunteers are sought in two-hour shifts to answer phones, take pledges, and call on friends to make donations. If you would like to participate but can’t work a two-hour shift, social media ambassadors are sought for Facebook, Twitter, and email. To volunteer, call Robin Grabowski at 315-464-5748. All money raised stays here to help sick and injured children at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and affiliated pediatric clinics.

Upstate band to perform Feb. 28

Upstate band, The Bronze Puppies, will perform at Rockin’ the Redhouse, a benefit concert, Feb. 28 at the Landmark Theater, 362 S. Salina St. Band members include Upstate’s Rachel Hopkins, MD, medicine, on vocals; Paul Klawitter, PhD, and Gary Johnson, MD, emergency medicine, on guitar; James Greenwald, MD, family medicine, on bass; and Lawrence Chin, MD, dean, College of Medicine, on drums. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance; $15 at the door and are available at http://www.theredhouse.org/rockin-the-redhouse/. The benefit supports Redhouse education scholarships.

Submissions for 33rd Dearing Writing Award competition due March 9

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities announces the 33rd Dearing Writing Award Competition. Awards will be presented in two categories: faculty/staff and student. The subject matter is open. Public Health offers course on lean management and leadership in health care March 17 to April 14

Public Health and Preventive Medicine will offer a one-credit course focusing on lean management and leadership in health care Tuesdays March 17 to April 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. in 318 Health Sciences Library, Weiskotten Hall. The course will be led by James Cody, MPA, former director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The course will award one graduate credit at standard SUNY Upstate graduate tuition rates. UUP members may be eligible for tuition benefits. Enrollment in the previous two modules (PHGE601 and PHGE602) is not required. Advocates for Upstate offers incentive for March monthly challenge participants 

Advocates for Upstate will give a $5 coupon toward a purchase at Perk Up or Upstate Bistro to anyone with an Upstate ID badge who completes the Well NYS Every Day Challenge in March, presented by Upstate’s Pathway to Wellness. Using the honor system, participants must complete one healthy monthly challenge behavior for the first 20 days in March and track their progress on the online form or on the paper form available through Pathway to Wellness. Begin the challenge by registering at http://wellnys.goer.ny.gov. The coupon will be presented when you complete the March challenge and the online tracking form. Paper forms must be submitted to Suzanne Brisk at brisks@upstate.edu. In addition to the coupon, certificates will be awarded to those who complete the challenge. Nominations for President's Employee Recognition Awards due April 1

If you know someone at Upstate who goes above and beyond, nominations are welcome for the President’s Employee Recognition Awards. The deadline for submission is April 1. Information for the award and a downloadable pdf nomination form is available at: http://www.upstate.edu/president/awards/. Paper copies of the form are being sent to all departments. Awards will be presented at a ceremony on June 17.

The six award categories are: 

  • Outstanding Diversity Contribution of the Year (Team) 
  • Community Service of the Year (Team and Individual) 
  • Team of the Year 
  • Leader of the Year 
  • Employee of the Year 
  • Provider of the Year 

Provider of the Year will be presented to a physician (MD, DO MBBS), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant who goes above and beyond his/her job responsibilities in delivering healthcare. Please note that while faculty members are not eligible for individual awards, they may be included in team nominations.

Healthcare Exploration Camp is April 8 to 10

Applications for the 2020 Healthcare Exploration Camp for ninth and 10thgraders are now being accepted online at: www.upstate.edu/volunteers/camp.php. Applications are due Feb. 28 by 4 p.m. Space is limited to 24 students and registration is $50 per camper. Application requirements include essays and recommendations from a guidance counselor. Concussion Symposium is April 20

The third annual Concussion Symposium will be held Monday, April 20 from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Scholar Hotel Syracuse, 1060 E. Genesee St. The symposium will focus on the common co-occurrence of concussion and whiplash injury. Speakers will review the underlying pathophysiologies of head and neck trauma, and the broad overlap in symptom presentation of the two conditions, which can make it difficult to determine the basis for the patient's complaints. Strategies to differentiate underlying causes of shared symptoms will be discussed, and best -practice approaches to symptom management will be outlined. CEUs will be offered. Transgender Health Conference is April 23 

Upstate’s Transgender Health Conference will be held April 23 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Weiskotten Hall and Setnor Academic Building. Applications are sought for the CNY Biotech Accelerator’s Medical Device Innovation Challenge now through May 31. Early stage medical device innovators are welcome to apply to this mentor- and resource-intensive six-month program. Accepted participants receive expert mentorship, free work space and equipment at CNYBAC, access to an extensive ecosystem, coordinated resource matching, contracted student-led legal and commercialization services provided by Innovation Law Center at Syracuse University, new Manufacturing Workshop, 4th Annual Concept to Commercialization Boot Camp, and more.
