Heart Walk team captains sought

Team Upstate seeks motivated individuals to serve as team captains for the 2019 American Heart Association Heart Walk, to be held April 19 at Onondaga Community College, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike. Team captains coordinate their department’s participation in the event. Team Upstate has been a top team for the past 22 years due, in large part, to the efforts of its team captains. Public Health offers a three-course series on lean management in healthcare 

Public Health and Preventive Medicine will offer a series of three one-credit course modules focusing on lean management in healthcare beginning in January. Courses will be led by James Cody, MPA, former director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Each course will award one graduate credit at standard SUNY Upstate graduate tuition rates. The three one-credit courses are designed to be taken in sequence and will be offered nights and weekends to be accessible to working professionals. NYSHIP option transfer period information and online resources available

The 2020 New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) option transfer period is open through Dec. 31. The new rates will be reflected in checks dated Dec. 24, 2019. Employees who participate with NYSHIP will receive a publication with rates and deadlines by mail to their home from Civil Service Employee Benefits. No action is required for employees who qualify for and plan to keep their current health insurance option.

Schwartz Center Rounds is Dec. 17

Schwartz Center Rounds will be held Tuesday, Dec. 17 at noon in the conference room on the first floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Louise Prince, MD, will moderate a panel discussion on what staff members do outside of work to stay healthy. Participants will identify how creativity and activity can help manage stress, allowing staff to be an example of self-care for patients, families, and colleagues; recognize ways to share the stress or isolation within and between disciplines; recognize the stress-release of sharing stories and concerns in a safe environment. Health Sciences Library will close at Dec. 24 and 31 at 3 p.m. 

Human Resources and Employee Student Health will close Dec. 24 at 3 p.m.

Employee Student Health will close Dec. 26, 27 and 31 at 4 p.m.

Hospital Purchasing will close Dec. 24 and 31 at noon; closed Dec. 25, Jan. 1. 

Contracts and Campus Purchasing will close Dec. 24 and 31 at noon. Time sensitive requests should be submitted via Self-Serve no later than Dec. 22 and 29 at 1 p.m. The department will open Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 at 8 a.m.

Spiritual Care Journal Club is Jan. 8

The Spiritual Care Journal Club will be held Jan. 8 from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. in 1224 Upstate University Hospital. Facilitator Rev. Chuck Stewart, PhD, will lead a discussion on the article Hospitalized Young Adults’ Expectations of Pastoral Interventions. Pick up a copy of the article in the Center for Spiritual Care on the first floor of Upstate University Hospital. The Upstate community is welcome to attend and bring a lunch.

Student Admissions to host information sessions Jan. 10 and 15

Student Admissions will host an information session on medical imaging sciences and radiation therapy Jan. 10 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Weiskotten Hall. Student Admissions will discuss medical imaging science and radiation therapy careers, degree programs, and admission requirements. Pre-retirement planning sessions for ERS members only is Jan. 22

Information sessions on pre-retirement planning for members of the New York State and Local Employee Retirement System who are within five years of retirement will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. in the ninth floor auditorium of Weiskotten Hall. The interactive session will include information on members’ New York state pension, social security, health insurance and Medicare benefits. Applications for Friend in Deed funding due Jan. 10

The Upstate Foundation is accepting applications from Upstate employees for Friend in Deed funding for projects that enhance the patient experience at Upstate University Hospital’s Community and Downtown campuses. Friend in Deed is the annual fund for the hospitals and is largely supported through donations from grateful patients and their families, as well as members of the Upstate family and the community. Guidelines and applications are available on the Upstate Foundation website at www.upstatefoundation.org/friendindeed  or by calling 315-464-4416. Applications require the approval of a department head. The deadline to submit applications to the Upstate Foundation office (CAB 326) is Friday, Jan. 10.
