For millions of Americans, involuntary movements produced by movement disorders are constant and disabling. Essential tremor is an uncontrollable shaking of the muscles of the hand, usually upon movement, as well as shaky voice, nodding head, and balance problems. Parkinson’s disease may present as tremor at rest, slowing of movements, and muscle stiffness. Dystonia appears as an involuntary twisting or cramping of muscles. While the causes for most of these disorders remain unknown, they sometimes run in families. Movement disorders such as tremor do not usually affect life expectancy, but they can become disabling for many common activities. Fortunately, there are multiple treatment options that can improve quality of life for people who have tremors or other movement disorders.

Advanced Technology

Patients receiving care for movement disorders at Upstate are treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes experts in movement disorders neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuropsychology, and emerging clinical technologies. Treatment options include minimally invasive lesioning using radiofrequency, gamma knife, or focused ultrasound (in collaboration with UHS), as well as deep brain stimulation (DBS).

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

DBS is a pacemaker for the brain that restores balance to the brain circuits that are affected by movement disorders. Upstate is one of the only places in the world that offers implantation of the entire DBS system in a single procedure without requiring patients to be awake. At most institutions, the DBS leads are implanted while the patient is awake in a long operation involving brain mapping and testing, followed by placement of the DBS pacemaker in a second operation weeks later. At Upstate, advanced imaging and surgical technology allows patients to undergo implantation while asleep in one operation using a very small incision and no hair removal. All the latest DBS technology is available at Upstate, including rechargeable batteries, remote telehealth programming, and brain sensing technology.
