Epilepsy affects 1 out of every 100 people, and more Americans are diagnosed with epilepsy each day than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease combined. While many people with epilepsy will respond to medical treatment, about 1 in 3 continue to have frequent or disabling seizures even after taking multiple medications. Many cases of epilepsy involve seizures that arise from a part of the brain that does not provide any useful function but only produces electrical discharges that spread to the rest of the brain, so it is sometimes possible to cure the disease using surgery.

Advanced Technology

At Upstate, patients have access to comprehensive epilepsy treatment, including next-generation imaging, minimally invasive lesioning options including radiofrequency and laser ablation, and advanced monitoring techniques to identify the precise location of seizure onset for surgical treatment. When surgery isn’t an option, all neuromodulation platforms are available, including vagal nerve stimulation, responsive neuromodulation, and deep brain stimulation. Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes providers with world class training and experience, including specialists in epilepsy neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, and clinical trials to identify breakthrough treatments.
