Grading Policy
The student's total composite score will be converted to the following grade classification consist with the Grading Policy for the Medical School:
Honors
The top 20%.
High Pass
The top 40% of students that have not been classified as Honors.
Pass
The remaining 60% of students.
In order to pass a student must have >3.0 in all individual competencies and individual mean scores must be <2.5 SD below the group mean in at least eight of the ten competencies.
- A passing grade on the NBME >60 is required for passing the course
- A score of >60% on the write-up is required to pass the course
- A score of >20% on the Standardized Patient exam
Conditional
Students will receive a Conditional if they:
- Receive a grade < 60% on the NBME exam.
- Receive a grade of < 60% on the History and Physical write-up.
- Score >3.0 in all individual competencies and individual mean scores must be <2.5 SD below the group mean in at least eight of the ten competencies.
- Receive a grade < 20% on the Standardized Patient exam.
- Demonstrate documented deficiencies in professionalism as defined in the clerkship orientation.
- Are absent from their responsibilities > 3 days.
Students who receive a Conditional grade will be required to remediate their deficiencies as dictated by the clerkship director. Once these remediation criteria are met the students grade will change to a Conditional Pass.
Fail
Students will receive a Fail if they:
- Receive a grade < 60 on the NBME exam; and
- Receive a grade of < 60% on the History and Physical write-up; and
- Score >3.0 in all individual competencies and individual mean scores must be <2.5 SD below the group mean in at least eight of the ten competencies; and
- Receive a grade < 20% on the Standardized Patient exam.
Remediation
Conditional Grade:
- Students receiving a grade < 60 on the NBME exam will only need to retake and pass the examination.
- Students receiving a grade of < 60% on the History and Physical write-up will remediate clinical time and formal History and Physical write-up.
- The amount of time and number of write-ups will be determined by the clerkship director and is non-negotiable.
- Students scoring >3.0 in all individual competencies and individual mean scores must be <2.5 SD below the group mean in at least eight of the ten competencies will remediate clinical time the amount and composition of which will be determined by the clerkship director and is non-negotiable.
- Students who receive a grade < 20% on the Standardized Patient examination will remediate clinical time the amount and composition of which will be determined by the clerkship director and is non-negotiable.
- Students who demonstrate documented deficiencies in professionalism will remediate clinical time and any other component of the clerkship as determined by the clerkship director and this is non-negotiable.
- Students that miss > 3 days of their clinical responsibilities will be required to remediate clinical time as set forth by the clerkship director.
- Students that do not meet the criteria of their remediation will receive a grade of Conditional Fail and will be required to remediate the entire 12 weeks of the clerkship and all of is components.
Failing Grade:
- The student will be required to remediate the entire 12 weeks of the clerkship and all of is components.
