Host Amber Smith: Here's some expert advice from Dr. Scott Wiener from Upstate Medical University. How can kidney stones be prevented?
To prevent kidney stones, we have to recognize that about 70% of stones are made of calcium oxalate. That's the most common type of stone. So for generic advice for preventing these types of stones, we want to maintain consistently high urine output every day. So that means you have to drink enough to pee 2.5 liters or just over a gallon every single day. On hot days, you might need to drink a little bit more. We also want to maintain a low salt or sodium diet, and we want to try to limit our protein to no more than four ounces at each sitting.
