Vector Biocontainment Lab focuses on diseases spread by ticks, mosquitoes
Upstate recently opened a Vector Biocontainment Lab, and the director, Saravanan Thangamani, PhD, tells about this facility, the first of its kind for Central New York. Thangamani is a professor of microbiology and immunology, known internationally for his expertise in ticks and tick-borne diseases. His research focuses on how ticks and mosquitoes transmit disease, and he's working on an anti-tick vaccine. Thangamani also tells about the Upstate Tick Testing Program, which began in April 2019 and has analyzed more than 9,000 ticks in its first two years.
