New injection medication among various options to treat HIV infection
A long-acting injection offers a new treatment option for people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Elizabeth Asiago-Reddy, MD, discusses this drug as well as other treatments for those diagnosed with HIV and preventive medication for those at high risk of HIV infection. She is an associate professor of medicine at Upstate who specializes in infectious diseases and the care of people with HIV/AIDS. Prompt treatment after HIV diagnosis is important, she says, and a once-daily pill to keep full-blown AIDS from developing is generally well tolerated, she says.
