Brain surgeon provides overview of epilepsy, its diagnosis and treatment
Epilepsy, which involves abnormal electrical activity of the brain, affects about 3.5 million Americans and 65 million people worldwide. Neurosurgeon Harish Babu, MD, PhD, director of minimally invasive neurosurgery at Upstate and part of its comprehensive epilepsy program, gives an overview of the disease, including the difference between having a seizure, which can result from various causes, and having epilepsy. He also explains how a majority of patients can control the disease through medication. If medication doesn’t work, however, various kinds of brain surgery, which he describes, can help to control the disorder.
