Heart failure can be treated with medicines, lifestyle changes

Heart failure means “something wrong with your pump,” explains nurse Natasha Zmitrowitz, heart failure data coordinator and educator at Upstate. She describes the common symptoms of heart failure, such as a buildup of fluid that might lead to trouble breathing while lying down, feeling full after eating just a little bit, or having shoes that suddenly feel tight. Zmitrowitz also goes over the causes of heart failure, as well as the typically prescribed treatments and lifestyle changes, such as weight management, a low-salt diet, no smoking and minimal alcohol. People who get this condition under control can often lead full lives, she notes. Click here for more information about heart failure from the Upstate Heart Institute.
