Domestic abuse likely underreported during pandemic, experts say

Reports of domestic abuse have declined during the coronavirus pandemic, but experts don't believe that's necessarily a good sign, or an accurate one. Upstate pediatrician Ann Botash, MD, medical director of the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center, and Randi Bregman, executive director of Vera House, provide advice about how to seek help and explain the challenges the pandemic presents in abuse cases. To report child abuse or seek help, call the New York State Child Abuse Hotline at 800-342-3720. Vera House, which works to end domestic and sexual violence and other forms of abuse, offers a chat function on its website and can also be reached by phone at 315-468-3260.
