After a motorcycle crash left him severely injured, Travis Rieder, PhD, received prescription opioids to help relieve the pain. He became dependent. Rieder -- the director of the master of bioethics degree program and a research scholar at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics - shares his experience and what it revealed to him about the American health care system in his book, "In Pain: A Bioethicist's Personal Struggle with Opioids." Rieder, who was at Upstate Medical University to deliver a lecture, previously shared his story with NPR's Terry Gross on "Fresh Air."
