Strategies for treating destructive behaviors in children
Will Sullivan, PhD, is a psychologist who works with children who have destructive behaviors, such as aggression, self-injury or property destruction. Adults may see the behaviors as problematic, but Sullivan explains that the children have figured out how to adapt to their environment to get what they want. Part of Sullivan's job as a therapist is to determine what needs the children have and to help them learn other ways of getting their needs met. Most of his patients are between 7 and 12 years old. He works in Upstate's Family Behavior Analysis Program.
