Chief nurse shares her breast cancer story, including combination treatment of surgery and radiation
After 19 years of annual mammograms, something suspicious showed up on Nancy Page's images. Page, chief nursing officer at Upstate University Hospital, underwent a biopsy and was diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ. At age 59, she became one of the estimated 60,000 women who receive the diagnosis each year. Page shares her personal story and how she decided to undergo intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), a procedure combining surgery to remove the tumor with radiation delivered to the tumor space.
