A medical mission trip to Haiti offers physicians from Upstate a chance to provide medical care as well as to learn about health care and illness in a different setting: a tropical developing nation. Upstate emergency physicians Brian Kloss, DO, who has taken part before, and Joseph Capogreco, MD, who was on his first trip, discuss the diseases and conditions they and their colleagues encountered in the town of Verrettes, where they worked. They note that some diseases they saw come from the lack of such things as running water, flush toilets and shoes, which are not universally available in Haiti. These trips, organized by the medical charity Health Corps Haiti, have been ongoing in the wake of the massive 2010 earthquake in that country, and Upstate regularly participates.
