Infectious disease textbook takes a page from graphic novels
An Upstate emergency physician tells how and why he decided on the unconventional illustrations for the textbook he wrote on infectious diseases. Brian Kloss, DO, worked with illustrator Travis Bruce to create comic-book images that accompany the medical text. The illustrations give the feel of a graphic novel to “Graphic Guide to Infectious Disease,” in ways that mix raucous humor (like the creative use of a stricken Viking or a burrito) with an unvarnished look at what happens in a case of, say, infectious diarrhea, parasitic worms or a sexually transmitted disease.
