How social media and online media affect medical decisions - and whether you should friend your doctor on Facebook

Amy Caruso Brown MDAre you "friends" with your doctor? Do you follow him or her on social media? Amy Caruso Brown, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics, bioethics and humanities at Upstate, accepted a friend request from the mother of a patient "and it forever changed my understanding of the practice of medicine." She wrote about this experience in an essay called "Pourous Boundaries" that was published in the June 27, 2017 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association. In this interview she differentiates between social media and using the internet to research medical information, and she explains the accuracy of the medical information available through social media. She also addresses the risks.
