Expanding the use of a heart-lung machine

Robert Dunton, MD (at right), and Christopher Tanski, MD ECMO -- that's short for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation -- is a medical technology that helps a variety of patients, including premature babies and adults whose hearts and/or lungs can heal better if a machine temporarily pumps their blood and oxygen. Believing that more patients may benefit from ECMO, Robert Dunton, MD (at right in photo), and Christopher Tanski, MD (at left), are creating a new service at Upstate University Hospital. Certain patients suffering from trauma, drug overdose or cardiac arrest may be recommended for ECMO as part of their care.
