Cybersecurity Awareness Month at Upstate: Opportunities to Stay Engaged

Cybersecurity is essential in healthcare to safeguard patient privacy, ensure regulatory compliance, maintain data integrity, protect financial stability, preserve reputation, and ultimately, to provide safe and effective patient care. Healthcare organizations invest in robust cybersecurity strategies, technologies, resources and training to mitigate the risks associated with the ever-evolving threat landscape.

At Upstate, the network operations and security department is comprised of 29 team members who are tasked with protecting the network, machines and data in over 60 Upstate locations from cyber threats.

"Cybersecurity Awareness Month is like a friendly nudge, reminding us to always keep security on our radar,” says David Hanson, director of network and information security services at SUNY Upstate Medical University. “In today's world, where digital threats keep changing, this awareness month serves as a prompt, encouraging us to stay alert, take action, and keep our organization and its people safe. We want to use this chance to chat about why security matters in our day-to-day work. Remember, having strong cybersecurity isn't just a target to hit; it's an ongoing journey that's vitally important for our success and for keeping the trust of our community."

The Information Management and Technology (IMT) network operations and security team will be holding informational webinars and tabling events for the Upstate community highlighting cybersecurity issues that could directly impact Upstate’s infrastructure, staff and patients.
