Fellowship Curriculum

Program Overview

The Division of Hospital Medicine offers a 1-year fellowship to Internal Medicine or Family Medicine board certified or board eligible physicians. Our goal is to provide a unique educational experience that will allow physicians to develop the tools, experience, and skills essential to become leaders in academic medicine.


The one-year curriculum incorporates core competencies, as defined


Clinical service 13 Weeks
Service and leadership 13 Weeks
Electives / research and tailored opportunities 13 Weeks
Time-off / research and tailored opportunities 13 Weeks

The fellowship involves 13 weeks of inpatient clinical service, across two hospitals in Syracuse NY.

Each fellow will engage in 13 weeks of leadership and service opportunities in areas essential to academic medicine.

1. CDI & UM 2 weeks
2. Clinical Operations 2 weeks
3. Quality and Research 6 weeks
4. Coding and Billing 1 week
5. Patient experience 2 weeks

Each fellow will have 13 weeks of elective time, which is flexible and may include training in: medical subspecialties (e.g., GI, pulmonary, ID, palliative, geriatrics), emergency medicine, ethics, POCUS, procedure teams, IR, RRT/code team, pain management, clinical pharmacy.


Numerous and diverse options exist at Upstate for individualized emphasis in areas specific to the fellow’s interests, including unique opportunities for formal leadership training, clinical research, and global health. Upstate has an active Clinical Research Unit engaged in inpatient and outpatient clinical trials for novel therapeutics and vaccines. International clinical rotations / QI opportunities may be pursued at our field sites in Kenya and Ecuador, as well as local opportunities for specialized training in refugee and immigrant health.

We sponsor H1B visa, but we do not sponsor J1 visa or J1 waiver

Compensation and benefits

Annual salary is $65,000 plus benefits. $1,000 is allowable for CME.
