Wastewater analysis can reveal disease spread in a community
Throughout the pandemic, wastewater surveillance has provided an early warning about COVID-19 outbreaks or a way to monitor ongoing outbreaks. Explaining how the process works is Syracuse University environmental epidemiologist David Larsen, PhD. He is working to scale wastewater surveillance statewide in New York and led a project that surveyed sewage from SU dormitories. Larsen is an associate professor in public health at SU’s Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
