Family doctors care for mothers at well-child visits to help assure healthy future births

Since the early 1990s, preventing premature births has been a goal of two groups, the Family Medicine Education Consortium and the IMPLICIT Network. The groups have recently focused on preventing premature births one woman at a time by providing "inter-conception" care to mothers during well-child visits to their family doctor. Gene Bailey, MD, explains what he discusses with mothers and how they can help reduce the chance of their subsequent babies being born too early. Bailey is an associate professor of family medicine at Upstate and oversees the family medicine residency program. IMPLICIT stands for Interventions to Minimize Preterm and Low birth-weight Infants using Continuous Improvement Techniques.
