Research Interests

  • My research interests include evaluating ways to improve health outcomes in marginalized communities, particularly refugees and immigrants, quality improvement, and clinical education. Our study, Integrated Care Management to Improve Diabetes Outcomes in Refugee and Immigrant Patients (I-Care), highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary community-engaged care model to improve quality metrics and health care costs for refugees and immigrants. I analyzed the structural barriers to healthcare for a recently resettled refugee with a rare medical condition. Additionally, we conducted a study to evaluate the association of sociodemographic and mental health factors with cardiovascular risk using measures of central blood pressure in resettled refugees in Syracuse, New York. I helped formulate a simulated refugee patient case for use within the Internal Medicine clinical education curriculum at SUNY Upstate to explore resident responses and potential consequences to using the term “non-compliant patient”.

Education Interests

  • My focus in medical education includes point-of-care ultrasound and simulation training.

Clinical Interests

  • I provide primary care and community outreach services to refugee populations.
