About Us

Since 1990, University Hospital has served as Central New York’s Pediatric Designated HIV Center. In that time, nearly 600 children and adolescents from 17 counties have been evaluated and/or treated for HIV. In addition, their families have benefited from specialized counseling and training designed to help them and their children cope with the disease, its complications and its implications.

The Center team works to provide services to HIV positive adolescents, young adults and children as well at adolescents and young adults at risk for becoming infected with HIV and STDs. Our program includes HIV specialty care, prevention education, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), HIV and STD testing, safer sex education and outreach education.

We encourage our adolescent, young adult and pediatric patients to participate in a range of activities that encourage socialization, support, education and just plain fun. In particular, we get all of our younger patients excited about our annual camp trip to Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY.

The Pediatric Designated HIV Center is a proud recipient of a Center of Excellence designation from the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute for its patient care services and its dedication to providing psychosocial and emotional support for HIV patients and their families.

In addition, in 2011 New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute designated the Pediatric Designated HIV Center an "Adolescent/Young Adult Specialized HIV Care Center," establishing the only Adolescent/Young Adult HIV Care Center in the Central New York region. The Specialized Care Center focuses on providing HIV specialty care, HIV and STD testing and transmission prevention, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP),HIV and STD education and outreach programs in the community for individuals ages 13-24.
