Components of patient care provided by social workers include:

  • Adjustment to illness—lifestyle changes, non-adherence to treatment
  • Crisis intervention: stabilization, problem-solving, short-term counseling and referrals
  • Facilitate psychiatric placements and out-patient referrals
  • Insurance issues
  • Limited assistance with financial concerns due to hospitalization (i.e. parking)
  • Referrals for accommodations (Ronald McDonald House, hotel discounts, etc.)
  • Violence: suspected family violence including domestic violence, child abuse/neglect and elder abuse
  • Support for end of life issues, coping with loss, including hospice referrals
  • Grief and loss resources
  • Decision making assistance regarding health care proxies and advanced directives
