Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship
The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship's mission is to provide a comprehensive educational experience that fosters clinical and academic excellence while preparing fellows for a successful career by: providing a complete, evidenced-based curriculum in the field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine; engaging in local and national quality improvement and research efforts; and demonstrating the highest standards in patient- and family-centered care.
To achieve our mission, the PHM faculty and fellows are dedicated to diagnosing and treating pediatric patients admitted to the hospital using patient and family-centered principles, medication stewardship and evidenced-based medicine. Located in the region's only pediatric hospital, Burn Center and Level I Trauma Center, the program utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to enhance the patient experience and address the unique needs of patients and families living in Central New York. Our catchment area includes the 22 surrounding counties and this keeps our service busy and thriving (average 3000 patients a year, daily average census about 36).
Research efforts primarily focus on quality improvement initiatives both at the local and national level to promote safe and effective care of hospitalized children.
The program is committed to preparing fellows for a successful career in the new subspecialty field of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Faculty inspire fellows not only by demonstrating exceptional care of pediatric patients but also by providing high quality didactics. The comprehensive curriculum and diverse patient population traits fellows in the full spectrum of hospital-based care and support the pursuit of individualized activities for those who desire to practice in academic and community settings. Graduates of our PHM Fellowship program will have the distinctive capabilities to meet the increasing demand for clinical expertise in inpatient medicine.
Our pediatric hospital division of 12 reflects the diverse opportunities at Upstate. In addition to clinical responsibilities, members of our team are also involved in the Pediatric Residency, Pediatric Clerkship, Quality Improvement, Internal Medicine Residency, Utilization Management and Pediatric Palliative Care. They also serve on a number of committees within the hospital and medical school.
