Scholarships

SUNY Upstate Medical University is pleased to offer a number of internal scholarships and grants to enrolled students. We also have a short list of of outside scholarship opportunities.

We encourage outside scholarship and grant applicants to start their search very focused and then broaden it strategically:

  1. Your hometown:  Check out local organizations such as Lions Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, Homeowners' Associations, local grocery stores, parent(s)' place of employment.
  2. Your County:  Check county associations that are specific to your career path.  For example, Onondaga County Medical Society.
  3. Your State:  Statewide associations/societies sometimes offer scholarships and grants.  For example:  New York Downstate Association for Respiratory Therapists (NYDART).
  4. Nationally:  Nationally recognized associations/societies can offer scholarships and grants.  For example:  The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS).

Should you have any questions about scholarship and grant opportunity, please contact our Admissions and Financial Aid Office at (315) 551-2057 or admiss@upstate.edu

Upstate University Medical Associates at Syracuse Scholarship

Purpose: Upstate University Medical Associates at Syracuse, Inc. (UUMAS) is the faculty practice plan which serves as the umbrella organization of the 18 clinical departmental practices within the College of Medicine (COM). This scholarship is given with the support and coordination of the COM and University Hospital (UH). The focus of this scholarship is to enable an underprivileged or disadvantaged student at COM to pursue a medical career in Primary Care. This scholarship will be earmarked towards those students who are specifically interested to train and practice in one of the Primary Care specialties, namely Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine and General Pediatrics and serve economically distressed patients in the CNY region. In light of the shortage of primary care providers in CNY and the need to increase access to Medicaid and indigent patients, this scholarship is geared to enable a UMU COM graduate to choose a residency in primary care without the influence of having to pay off significant medical education debt. Preference will be given to underrepresented minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Requirements: The awardee must matriculate through usual means into the college of medicine. Nominations by the financial aid office will be welcomed in addition to applicants who respond to scholarship posting. All matriculants are considered and screened. Applicants must complete an application that includes a financial needs assessment. It is expected that candidates can demonstrate high academic achievement in college (GPA 3.5+ and MCAT scores 518+). The top applicants will be interviewed by a panel of UUMAS, UH, and COM representatives either in person or via video conference. One applicant will be selected as the scholarship awardee. The applicant must be an underprivileged or disadvantaged student and demonstrate a sincere interest in entering a primary care residency program, practice in CNY and offer access to Medicaid and indigent patients. Scholarship Maintenance Requirements: For each year of medical school, student must be in good standing and have no conditionals. Student must graduate in good standing from COM within four years.
