Promotion and Tenure
College of Medicine
Promotion and tenure of faculty in the College of Medicine is based on the Standards and Criteria for Appointment, Rank, Promotion, and Tenure Policy.
This policy was created with the intent to provide a flexible, trackless system to manage requirements for promotion. Faculty choose an “area of excellence” for promotion based on their effort allocation and accomplishments in a selected area (research, education, service, or administration). Faculty meet annually with their chair or division director to review their work and continually assess their growth and strides toward promotion.
Faculty support for promotion is provided by the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, including workshops, webinars, and one-to-one support. Our assistant dean for promotions is eager to help! See Quicklinks Calendar for upcoming workshops.
Faculty should work with their departmental promotions and tenure committee to be sure they are also on track to meet their departmental internal criteria. Each department may have supplemental criteria for promotion, above and beyond those of the College of Medicine. Each department is expected to create a P&T review committee,
There are five College of Medicine Faculty Appointment and Promotions Committee meetings annually. The committee is composed of faculty peers who are tenured professors, non-tenured professors, and tenured associate professors. See policy for details. The deadline for submission of your promotion dossier to the College of Medicine Faculty Appointment and Promotions Committee is one month prior to the meeting. This deadline is important because faculty on the committee need to have enough time to review! Dossiers submitted prior to the deadline will be reviewed by faculty affairs deans for completeness and the departments will be provided with feedback, if needed, in order to improve the packet.
