Melanoma

Melanoma refers to a cancer that can develop, among other places, in the eye. Although rare, this type of tumor can cause loss of life.

Unfortunately, melanoma can strike several parts of the eye. The retinal form, or more accurately the choroidal form, grows underneath the retina. The diagnosis of this form involves several factors. The location of the tumor and its size are important. Sometimes an ultrasound test, a test using sound waves, like the kind used to look at a fetus in a mother's womb, is used to evaluate the nature of the tumor and its physical characteristics.

The treatment can involve a wide variety of modalities including laser, radiation, and surgical removal.
