AMR Foundation for Research and Education

The AMR Foundation recognizes that high quality prehospital care begins with provider education.  In some cases, the cost of EMT and paramedic education may prevent otherwise well qualified candidates from pursing a career in EMS, especially in medically underserved areas in the United States.

For the 2021 academic year, the AMR Foundation intends to provide educational grants to support EMT and paramedic education scholarships to be administered by EMT and paramedic education and training institutions.  Funds will be distributed from teh AMR Foundation directly to the educational institution.

Her thirst for knowledge and tireless determination provided the foundation for quality care to all patients she reached, both directly and through the extension of her students. Gail’s memory is celebrated by every EMS professional who demonstrates her passion by making a difference.

The Central New York Community Foundation will award four $1,250.00 scholarships for students to complete paramedic education.

The Deb Duethorn Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Deb Duethorn Memorial Scholarship Fund is provided through the Central New York Community Foundation in memory of one of Onondaga County’s most remarkable professional young women. Duethorn, whose untimely death occurred in the summer of 1996, was not only a gifted registered flight nurse, but also an outstanding paramedic who gave tens of thousands of hours of prehospital emergency medical care to her patients. Sergeant Duethorn was the first woman member of the Onondaga County Sheriffs’ Department SWAT team. She was also a courageous firefighter with the Belgium Cold Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Duethorn however, was perhaps best known in her role as an educator. She embodied the word “teacher,” whether at the police academy with recruits, at the seminars and paramedic courses she presented, or in everyday encounters where she quietly and patiently taught one-on-one. Whether in jeans and a T-shirt (her preference), flightsuit or duty uniform, Duethorn forever touched the lives of her family, friends, co-workers and patients. Slightly irreverent about social convention, Duethorn’s wit and sense of humor left their imprint on all who experienced the gift of knowing her.

This scholarship in memoriam of Duethorn has been awarded to at least one recipient per year since 1999. Application information can be found at www.cnyems.org.

The Deb Duethorn Memorial Scholarship Fund is a yearly $1,000.00 award administered by the Central New York Community Foundation to assist persons pursuing education in the fields that Deb herself was committed to. Applicants must be seeking education to further career or volunteer aspirations in any or all of the following categories: emergency medical service, law enforcement, firefighting and nursing. Applicants should explain his or her dedication to one, several, or all of those fields.

Prospective applicants, who live in one of the following counties: Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego or Tompkins, should complete the form below and submit the necessary requirements by the stipulated deadline to:
