National Accredited Programs for Breast Centers - Gold Logo

Our Team

Our multidisciplinary team of physicians consists of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and radiologists with support from oncology nurses and social services staff.

About the Program

Our program is for patients seeking treatment for breast cancer. Patients may be newly diagnosed, seeking second opinions, facing recurrences of cancer or requiring the level of expertise provided by University Hospital's cancer specialists.

We Offer

  • Consultation
  • Evaluation
  • Treatment
  • Prevention and education

Our Physicians

Our physicians have both academic and clinical appointments at Upstate Medical University and its teaching hospital, University Hospital. Many of them are also involved in research projects. Consequently, their level of knowledge and skill in their particular specialty is unlikely to be found in most other health care settings.

Program Benefits

The multidisciplinary approach to the management of breast cancer has significant benefits for our patients. These include a clear presentation of treatment options for the patient to consider, without the need to meet individually with several different specialists; and generally a shorter time between diagnosis and the initiation of treatment.

The program provides patients with evaluations by a breast surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist in a single visit. All medical records, breast imaging, and breast pathology results are reviewed and discussed by the physicians and treatment plans customized for each patient.

Treatment Options

Treatment may involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or immunotherapy, or a combination of these therapies. Beyond its physical effects, breast cancer often has a significant emotional and psychological impact on patients and their families. Part of the treatment plan may include referral to a oncology social worker, or psycho-oncology services.

Referrals can be made to a wide array of other support services available to our patients including reconstructive surgery consultation, lymphedema therapy, nutrition counseling and genetic counseling.

Intraoperative Radiation Therapy

Upstate Cancer Center is now offering intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for select patients with early-stage breast cancer. Breast intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) provides clinicians with the option to perform radiation therapy in the operating room at the time of surgery.

Savi Scout

SCOUT® Wire-Free Radar Localization System is the world’s first and only wire-free RADAR breast tumor localization system. And the Upstate Cancer Center is the only hospital in Central New York using this advanced wireless technology, commonly referred to as Savi Scout.
