Norton College of Medicine 3-year option for select students.

3 Year Program (3YP)

Upstate Medical University's Norton College of Medicine is launching a three-year MD program (3YP) for select students starting in fall 2023. The program is for high-performing students who would like to finish medical school in fewer than the traditional four years and want to be on a directed pathway to a residency at Upstate.

The three-year medical school option saves a year’s tuition and is geared for students who already know what specialty they would like to pursue. Following their medical school acceptance, students may apply to the 3YP program. 3YP applicants will only be able to apply to one residency program. Acceptance into this program leads to a directed pathway to a designated residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University. If accepted, the residency program is committing to rank the student in a position to match in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

3YP students will continue on as residents in one of seven residency programs at SUNY Upstate:

Other programs may be added at a later date. Departments will incorporate 3YP students into their activities while also meeting with them and regularly advising them. 3YP will receive customized, individualized mentorship with faculty in their particular discipline.
