BS/MD Program

Our mission is clear: to recruit, retain, and matriculate interested and qualified undergraduates into Upstate's esteemed MD program. At the heart of our program lie several key objectives designed to foster academic excellence, support aspiring medical professionals, and facilitate a seamless transition into medical school.

Program Objectives:

  • Attract and Retain: We aim to attract qualified students to Syracuse University and Upstate, fostering a vibrant community of aspiring medical professionals.
  • Smooth Transition: Our program ensures a seamless transition from undergraduate studies to Upstate's MD degree program, providing the necessary support every step of the way.
  • Information and Support: We provide comprehensive information specific to Upstate's College of Medicine and offer collateral and co-curricular experiences to support students' medical school aspirations.
  • Diversity and Mentorship: We are committed to recruiting, supporting, and mentoring a diverse group of students, fostering a supportive community for all.
  • Academic Coordination: We encourage academic coordination and facilitate faculty-student interaction to enhance the learning experience.
  • Early Engagement: Our program promotes early faculty-student interaction, laying the groundwork for successful academic and professional journeys.

Binghamton University & Syracuse University- BS/MD Program

These programs are tailored for aspiring medical professionals, providing a seamless transition from both Binghamton University and Syracuse University to Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine. Students selected for the BS/MD Program will experience collateral and co-curricular support for their medical school aspirations, along with mentorship opportunities and early faculty-student interaction with Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine faculty. The BS/MD program is highly competitive, offering up to five annual places each for Binghamton pre-medical students and Syracuse high school seniors.

Preferred Candidate Characteristics:

  • New York State residents, especially those from Central/Upstate New York.
  • From rural or medically underserved communities.
  • First-generation college students or those with lower socioeconomic status.
  • Professed interest in staying in Central New York with ties to the region.

Is there a BS/MD Program at Upstate Medical University?

Yes, we currently offer a BS/MD program but have made significant changes. Please see the information below regarding the school we offer partnership currently:

Freshman Track

Binghamton University 

This program is designed for first year pre-medical students and allows for a seamless transition from Binghamton University to Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine. The BS/MD program is competitive, with five places available each year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the BS/MD program, first year students must have:

  • A high school gpa of 90% or higher/3.50 or higher.
  • A gpa of 3.50 or higher from their first semester at Binghamton University.
  • SAT score of 1360 or higher (combined Critical Reading & Math) or an ACT score of 29 or higher.
  • Extra-curricular activities demonstrating experience in a healthcare setting and a commitment to community service or volunteer work. 

Preferred Candidates 

Preferred candidates will possess the following characteristics. 

  • New York State residents, especially those from Central/Upstate New York.
  • Be from rural or medically underserved communities.
  • Be first generation college students or those with lower socioeconomic status.
  • Have a professed interest in staying in Central New York with ties to the region.

HS Senior Track

Syracuse University / SUNY Upstate Medical University Combined Bachelor’s-M.D. Program

This program is designed for high school seniors interested in pursuing a medical career and allows for a seamless transition from Syracuse University to Upstate’s Norton College of Medicine. The BS/MD program is competitive, with five places available each year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the BS/MD program, first year students must have:

  • A high school gpa of 90% or higher/3.50 or higher.
