About the Medical Technology Program
Medical Technologists (also known as clinical laboratory scientists) develop, perform, and supervise laboratory testing that is used to diagnose and treat disease and to provide vital data for research studies.
Our Master of Science program is intended for those who currently have an Associate or Bachelor's degree. The Medical Technology program at Upstate Medical University would provide a pathway to achieve the goal of becoming an advanced medical technologist.
Medical Technology, MS Program
The Master’s program in Medical Technology provides advanced training to medical technologists and specializes in microbiology. Master's students also select a minor area of concentration in management/ supervision, education, or basic science. Students will have the opportunity for professional advancement by acquiring expanded knowledge and skills in microbiology.
Our Medical Technology, MS program is 5 semesters (two years) long and begins in the fall. Graduates of this program are NOT eligible to apply for New York State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Prospective students with a bachelor's degree in a field other than Medical Technology, who want to be eligible to take the NYS Medical Technology license examination should pursue the Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.
Work experience following completion of a bachelor’s degree in medical technology is NOT required prior to application to the master’s program.
Part-time option
There is a part-time option available for individuals who will be working a full-time job while completing this program. Part-time students can access webinars and recorded lectures to fulfill some of the didactic course requirements. Thesis work and laboratory research can be conducted during non-work hours.
